Our Air America station, KPOJ 620 AM in Portland, IS owned by Clear Channel. They are experimenting with what they call "Progressive Talk", which in practice means that they carry most of Air America's shows, plus Ed Schultz who is not AA (syndicated by Jones Radio network.) Word has it that a San Diego station owned by Clear Channel will roll out the same programming there, but San Diego is far more conservative than Seattle or Portland so it will be interesting to see how that works.
Clear Channel also owns KEX 1190 AM in Portland, which has a powerful 50,000 watt signal. Unfortunately, that's where they put Rush Limbaugh and "Dr." Laura. The smaller 5000 watt KPOJ gets the AA/Ed Schultz treatment. If I'm driving to Seattle from here, it craps out at around Centralia.
Clear Channel is showing a willingness to work both sides of the fence, and why not since liberal money spends the same as conservative money, and God knows there are plenty of liberals in both markets.
It has been interesting to listen as KPOJ picks up new advertisers. In the first ratings period here, Al Franken beat both Limbaugh and O'Reilly in their time slot, and Ed Schultz handed Hannity his ass.
I don't see why switching KJR, which Clear Channel owns in your market wouldn't work. Their ratings suck now. AirAm does at least have some competition in the Seattle area with KIRO's Dave Ross (is he still running for congress?) and the excellent Mike Webb. And everyone knows KKKVI sucks. Portland had NOTHING but the usual suspects plus the local puerile Lars Larson, our very own conservative idiot hate-monger (think Victor Carlson on steroids.) It was so bad that while in my car I often resorted to trying to listen to KIRO from here, which is a stretch but can be done.
That's kind of how it looks from here just across the Big Creek. Judging from KPOJ's awesome numbers here, Seattle can't be far behind, it's just too big a market to ignore. Money talks.
Here, everyone I know listens to KPOJ, so much so that it is likely cutting into NPR's ratings.
