1. Who is worse?
My general rule of thump is always vote for the absolute worst in the Republican Primary.

Sometimes it's hard to pick the greater of the numbskulls, though.

2. But of course
They all suck, though. Darrow is most troublesome, since he has a big bankroll (attractive to the GOP).

Maybe I'll go and vote for Welch. Do I have to register as a Repug for this? Might be kinda funny, though.

so you can vote in any primary you want, you just go and pick right when you arrive at the polls. I would discourage voting for Welch. He is the only Republican candidate who isn't a complete moron, which means that he will get some points in during the debate (I think Wisconsin Public Television will probably host one). If you want to go vote for a weak candidate, vote Lorge. For more comedic value, vote for Russ Darrow and watch him win the primary, then get clobbered by Feingold in the debate.

The Wisconsin State Journal (Moderate Repub; but has endorsed Doyle for Gov, Lautenschlager for AG, and has endorsed several Dem candidates for State Senate and Assembly), makes a great case why Welch will be the strongest candidate to try to beat Feingold. Welch's circumstances are nearly identical to the ones Feingold encountered in '92. In '92, Feingold's two Democratic primary opponents bashed each other (both had a ton more money than Feingold), Feingold won, and beat the incumbent Republican. Now, Michels and Darrow are making idiots out of themselves bashing Feingold, and Welch might come out with the victory and have the best shot at beating the incumbent Democrat, Russ Feingold.

As an aside, I will be really interested to see if the State Journal endorses Kerry over Bush. It is not out of the question; I'd say the chances are about 66% Bush and 33% Kerry. If they do endorse Kerry, I will try to post some letters from the whining neocons about how their old Republican newspaper is turning into a "liberal rag" once again. (Like they did when it endorsed Doyle.)

5. Welch is damaged goods...

... from last time, sort of a 2004 version of Mark Neumann but not as creepy. He'd be the weakest challenge to Feingold.

Darrow can barely speak English in a forum, and the debate would be fun to watch. Too bad that in the real world, few people would decide based on it. Michels is the brightest and has a good resume; too bad he joined the Dark Side. He doesn't have much of a bankroll though, which is fortunate because he could have been dangerous.

6. Michels and Darrow are both self-made millionaires.
so Michels doesn't have a weak bankroll at all.

7. Yeah,
I forgot about that, Big Al. I see that his ads are starting to run now, too.

4. Welch has the Saxby Chambliss lynch mob working for him
I personally think he's weaker than the rest but I'm not sure I want to invite that kind of political campaign to Wisconsin - even if I think Russ can handle the weasel.

8. You forgot one
Lorge. He hasn't been running much of a campaign.

9. anyone but Darrow
Darrow has name recognition, which morons like when they go into the voting booth.
Even if someone has great dirt on him the right only cares about someones character if it is someone on the left.
