By Curt Andersen News-Chronicle The primary election is on September 14th. Republican candidates are finally scratching out their positions so that we can shine the bright light of day on them.
Of much interest to me is the Wisconsin race for U.S. Senator. The incumbent, Russ Feingold, has served two 6-year terms and has caught the eye of citizens nationwide for his courageous vote against what is laughingly called “The Patriot Act.” Feingold also voted against going to war in Iraq…another courageous vote. Nearly everyone else acted like sheep. Also, Feingold put his head together with Republican Senator John McCain to craft the McCain-Feingold Act, which is a first step to controlling what has become the dirtiest stain on our government, campaign donations.
The Republican Party has four candidates running in this primary: Russ Darrow, millionaire Wisconsin auto dealer; Tim Michels, millionaire building contractor; millionaire attorney Robert Gerald Lorge; and Robert Welch, Wisconsin Senator (and earlier, Assembly Representative) from Redgranite.
Rather than separating religion and state, as the Founding Fathers intended, each of these men has wrapped himself in his Christianity. Their Bible-thumping makes them sound more like they’re running for tailgate preacher than senator.
