It looks like the Reps will run John Gard again vs Steve Kagen in the 8th Congressional District
Gard travels inside track toward rematch
Wieckert decides against seeking GOP nomination for Kagen’s 8th District seat

By Ed Lowe
Post-Crescent staff writer

APPLETON — Former state Assembly Speaker John Gard appears to be well on his way to an election rematch against U.S. Rep. Steve Kagen, the medical doctor who thwarted his congressional bid in 2006.

Gard, of Suamico, is building a campaign war chest with the help of a team including the longtime chief of staff to former 8th District Rep. Mark Green, R-Green Bay, and some well-publicized support from national party backers.

Meanwhile, the once-bustling field of potential GOP challengers to Kagen, D-Appleton, is starting to resemble a party of one.

Gard’s early national backing may also reflect “the national mood” of GOP leaders hungry to avenge past losses, he said. “They look at the 8th Congressional District as one of the top targets in the country,” Jefferson said.

The national mood for the Republicans might be to avenge past losses, but the national mood for the American people is to get away from Bush's policies. That little worm, Gard, was nothing but a Bush mouthpiece.

3. Freshman incumbents are always at risk
especially if the GOP is willing to $pend. But Kagen is a fighter and I think the 8th is so happy to have a Democrat that they will work to keep him... and hopefully the DCCC will back him up again.
I think he's a terrific congressman.

6. GOP Money- There is none. No local party base offices either.
The GOP has no money.
The little money, they do have, is not going to some freshman...they need to keep the senior ones who co-chair important committees.
Plus, that largest GOP county organization in GReen Bay is still decertified. They have no local party base in the largest population are within the 8th.
Gard is not liked in the northern part of the 8th. He was despised in Madison.

He was 110% behind Bush, so the 'change' factor is not in his camp.

He'd better announce soon, or someone else may jump in that race and undermine his whole 'annointment'.

7. I saw one of Gard's ads on WisPolitics
I was thinking of National GOP money, not State or Local. I don't think Gard would do better a second time, but the GOP is desperate.

As far as I'm concerned, I'd like to run them out of the 6th and the 1st this year and then go back and get rid of Sensenbrenner after that. No more Republicans going to Washington from Wisconsin, period.

:kick: I'm on a mission. :kick:

8. FEC Jan 31st financial reports should tell something
The FEC requires financial reports to be released on Jan 31st.

So we should see, if Gard, did manage to collect enough aluminum cans last quarter.

As of Jan 14th, still no Brown County Republican Party.

Mrs. Gard is running the Marinette GOP.
Isn't that a bit illegal to have your wife running a political party, if you're running for federal office?
Somebody check on that one.

Their website has a calendar on it, with all the events and goings on.
Too bad they forgot to put the ELECTION DATES on it!
