Tom Flanagan's account of what happened in the crucial May 19, 2005, meeting with Chuck Cadman takes on new importance this week, since Prime Minister Stephen Harper has filed his formal statement of claim in his lawsuit against the Liberals in the Chuck Cadman affair.
Harper's legal filing offers a new, detailed version of what happened when Cadman met with two Conservative representatives, campaign boss Doug Finley and longtime Harper aide Tom Flanagan. It describes a detailed negotiation with a likely candidate in the next election.
But the statement of claim's account is markedly different from Flanagan’s recollection in his 2007 book Harper’s Team: Behind the Scenes in the Conservative Rise to Power. Flanagan remembers only a brief chat, on that spring day, with a weary, dying man.
