Afghan roadside bomb kills Canadian soldier
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — A Canadian soldier was killed Saturday by a roadside bomb blast, which is now the No. 1 threat against coalition forces in Afghanistan.

Sapper Sean David Greenfield, 25, a combat engineer based in Petawawa, Ont., died when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device, or IED, in the western reaches of Zhari district, about 35 kilometres west of Kandahar city.

Sapper Greenfield was taking part in an ambitious four-day, Canadian-led operation near the Zhari town of Mushen, which is largely controlled now by Taliban insurgents. The troops were searching rural compounds for weapons and bomb-making materials.

The operation also involved American and British troops.
