How many new Canadians are on DU?

I just learned about this new law today, and I've been a citizen since April 17!

I'm honored and touched to be a new citizen of Canada. My father was born in Ontario and left with his parents and siblings for the U.S. when he was a youth. My grandmother was born in Owen Sound; my grandfather in Brantford. They homesteaded in Saskatchewan in the 1920s.

A question: are Canadians happy to have the new citizens? Or not?

What I'm wondering now is what happened to my grandparents' homestead near Ceylon Saskatchewan.

It must be somewhat mindblowing to find you have always been a 'dual' citizen of a country you have previously visited thinking your only connection was ancestral with no other ramifications.

Are you going to try and find out what happened to the homestead? Now you are Canadian, it might make the search easier but I am just guessing!

5. it is mind boggling!

First, I have to get a certificate of citizenship by mail. That will entail getting a certified copy of my father's birth certificate, which I believe my sister has somewhere. I send documents and $75, and I get the certificate of citizenship!

As far as the homestead is concerned, I know that it is possible to trace that through the provincial offices. I have never been to the homestead. My aunt got close in 1959, but didn't know the actual description of the property. My grandfather built the town's bandstand either in Ceylon or Lang, and she saw that in disrepair.

Of course, there are lots of stories of prairie life told by my dad over the years -- the snows, the prairie fire, the cowboys and Indians, etc. Just like the "Little House On The Prairie" books. :-)

Hmmmm, do you get to vote in our federal elections once you have your Canadian citizenship? I sure hope so because I know it will be a vote our bush-lite government won't get!

7. My paternal grandparents

were born in Minnesota and homesteaded in Saskatchewan near Humboldt. Some of their children ( my aunts and uncles ) have applied for and received dual ( American ) citizenship. Kinda cool really.
