NDP has enough votes to save gun registry: Layton
Edited on Tue Sep-14-10 07:11 PM by polly7
Federal NDP Leader Jack Layton says enough members of his party will vote to defeat a Conservative backbencher's bill to repeal the long-gun registry.

NDP Leader Jack Layton has said he wants to submit legislation to fix the long-gun registry. (Adrian Wyld/Canadian Press)
Layton said Tuesday an "overwhelming majority" of his rural caucus is on his side after consultations at the party's caucus meeting in Regina.

"After all these discussions, I'm very confident that the votes that are needed to continue the registry so that it can be fixed will, indeed, be there," Layton told reporters. "I'm feeling very optimistic about what lies ahead as a result."

With all Liberals and the Bloc Québécois poised to vote on Sept. 22 to halt Tory MP Candice Hoeppner's private member's bill and the Conservatives set to support the bill, the fate of the registry lies with the NDP, which allows its MPs to vote however they want on private member's bills.

I can remember when I was running the post office and the registration forms were picked up there, not many at all complained about this. A few about what a pain in the butt it was to fill out, but as to the actual registration ........ very few (in a rural area where long-guns were kept in nearly household).

1. And the opposition FUCKS it up again......
I swear to god there is nothing but morons on both sides running our country. The NDP and Libs should be completely SILENT about the registry. Those who don't want it are vocal, the rest are indifferent. Why are they pretending there's people in Canad who want it? NO ONE CARES EXCEPT THOSE AGAINST IT!

Meanwhile, there's actual issues being completely ignored. It's a fucking joke.

have people dying overseas, covering up Afghan prisoner abuses, environmental catastrophe, trying to dismantle our health-care system, Harper keeps going further and further to the right with his arrogance and lunacy ....... the scariest part is ....... there are more and more ordinary citizens falling in line with him. We need some effective leadership on all sides. These people are a joke and have forgotten what we used to stand for. MO.

4. Prisons for unreported crimes, Harper firing civil servants
The list of things you could nail the Cons on is endless and yet the opposition picks this and fighter jets.

3. Interesting...it must mean Mr. Layton and the NDP are getting...
enough heat from their own supporters to move on this, not to mention they don't want to be seen as supporting the Cons again.

Good, any defeat of Con bills, assuming this does happen, is good news, imo.

5. Fifth New Democrat changes vote, backs gun registry
"Should Ottawa have spent a billion dollars on this thing? I say no way, and so do most people around here," she added.

"But that start-up money is gone, and I want to look forward, not back. I think many people were surprised to learn this month that it now only costs a dime per Canadian to keep the registry running."

The Bloc Quebecois says it will vote against the bill in a Commons vote next Wednesday, and Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff has ordered his caucus to do the same. That puts the bill's fate in the hands of the NDP."

"She condemned Harper's increasingly bitter campaign against the registry and singled out Conservative MPs who describe police associations as "special-interest groups."

"All of the major Canadian policing organizations say the registry is helping front-line officers keep our communities safer and we need to give them the tools to succeed," she said."

Trying to turn this into a huge political wedge issue isn't working out so well, Mr. Harper.

6. Good! I think the Liberals mismanaged the registry, ie costs, etc, but...
I think the registry itself is a good thing and, it seems, so do the various law enforcement agencies so I am glad there is the support from the Opposition parties to vote down the bill to do away with it. The bonus, of course, is to see the Harper cabal foiled again, lol.
