Chretien - not a leader, a manager
What is his legacy? Granted, Martin did ok with the economy, but what else has happened in the last 10 years. My personal opinion, is that Canada has taken a few steps backwards on the world stage.

1. Canada
eliminated the deficit, lowered the debt, raised the dollar, killed Quebec separatism, stayed out of Iraq, and became more independent of traditional allies, that is England, France, the US.

Clinton was just in Toronto, and said we are the model for the twenty-first century. Just what we think!

2. Martin Did OK
How do you think that he managed to do OK?
By the grace of god?
What makes one think that we want a leader. Maybe just someone that does their work.
Don't know if you remember the third world status that we were descending into.
Don't know if you remember the vote for/against Canada where the difference was 0.1%
Don't know if you see the clouds on the horizon now with the separatists. When was the last time that Bouchard hit the news.

MONTREAL - There should be a public debate on two-tier health care, former Quebec premier Lucien Bouchard says.

Parliament Hill watchers have always been aware that Jean Chrétien harboured serious doubts about Paul Martin's political judgment.

The former prime minister made little secret of his sense that if his erstwhile rival got his wish to run Canada, he would be an accident waiting to happen.

3. IMO Chretian is a died in the wool scrappy politian .
Definitely a hard-nosed leader, a political boss not a corporate CEO. Martin is more of a manager especially when you consider his inner circle of advisors from Earnscliffe. Martin clearly doesn't have Chretian's political smarts and Chantel's column is right on the mark as is Chretian's assessment of him as an "accident waiting to happen".
