Can you offer any advice on Cape Breton?
Hi Canadian DUers.

My husband and I are going over to NS next week. We have some hotel reservations made, basically for Halifax, but then we're heading off for Cape Breton and the Cabot Trail with nothing planned.

Does anyone have any favo(u)rite inns or lodging that we should look into? Any hints or tips?

I know this isn't a political question but we may look for property in case we need to find a new home after November. ;)

Thanks!

1. Are you Celtic at all?
Rankin family comes from there.

I believe they have a Gaelic college as well.

Good music, good people

3. Yes, I'm Irish
I love the Rankins' music. That's one of the reasons we're headed that way. What a shame when the brother was killed, though.

Thanks! :)

2. Baddeck (sp) has the Silver Dart Lodge
Not fancy, but very nice people and they have some "chalets". Nova Scotia didn't seem to have much in the way of "luxury" accomodations, but all the people were very nice.

Halifax is a great town.

5. Inverness
Edited on Sun Aug-08-04 10:50 AM by qwertyMike
Miles and miles of beach
Water temp. 70+

And good fiddle music in the area. Visit the Glenora Distillery on the way and the Casual Gourmet restaurant in Inverness.

Linger a while and you Will get the flavour.
The RULES don't apply in Cape Breton !!

ON Edit;
They are only 15 min from the Rankin home. The Rankins, and Ashley MacIsaac play at the Taverns in Inverness and Cheticamp.

6. Visited Nova Scotia a couple of years ago
We'd always stop at a tourist info booth by mid-afternoon and they would find us accommodation for the night. The places were not only clean and friendly but also cheap, around 40$ a night. We did this throughout the whole trip and it worked like a charm.

It is simply beautiful there as is the rest of the province that we visited. I was hoping to get back there this year but our friend in Lunenburg just passed away and my heart isn't in it anymore.

Hope you enjoy your trip.

9. Glen Breton whisky
Rare, expensive, and as beautiful to the senses as the mist in a Cape Breton sunrise.

10. Driving the Cape Breton Highlands is a MUST!
It is breathtaking! I drove all over Nova Scotia, including Cape Breton Island, last year. There is also a lodging place called the Highland Inn, located above Great Brador Lake and next to the Highland Village which takes you through the history of the Scots coming and settling in Nova Scotia.

You will enjoy your trip, I have NO doubt! Nova Scotians are the most welcoming, warm people, imo!

12. Excellent info
Thanks.

I've always thought the Cabot Trail looked gorgeous. I'm anxious to drive around and perhaps hike a bit.

THanks for your advice. :)

13. You're welcome!
While you are in Halifax, make sure and visit the Halifax Citadel, a historic site, a wonderful fort from the time of the British. I enjoyed it even more than Fort Louisburg, less touristy, imo, although Fort Louisburg is great too!
