Not an FLQ attack. But an Al-Qaida attack or something?

11. For the sake of terror
Think about it, they attack the US's friends in an attempt to pressure them outta Iraq. Plus there are US military outposts in Canada too. Like Nanoose bay, where they test torpedos and stuff.

12. They aren't after us
We aren't invading Iraq, we've always been even-handed on Israel/Palestine, and we haven't put dictatorships in power in the ME.

The US wouldn't leave Iraq because we got attacked! Other countries have been bombed, and the US hasn't left.

The US has bases around the world.

Actually, they don't need to attack anyone ever again. Just send a few emails and everybody panics.

14. And they aren't
'Terrorists' don't just go bomb things for fun, or something to do when they're bored.

They have a purpose to all this, and it's not likely to include Canadians. Anything's possible, but it's unlikely.

There are a lot of countries they'd be more inclined to attack. The UK for example. Or Italy.

But if they do, they do.

Bombs have been going off around the world for years. Basques, IRA, Red Army, Timothy McVeigh etc.

But seriously, if I was a terrorist, I would want to get pressure from "developed countries" for the US to withdrawl.... I would do that by bombing nations like Canada

16. Why would they want the US to leave Iraq?
It's costing the US a fortune, not to mention friends and allies, it's providing lots of al qaeda recruits, jamming the oil supply, and has put the Saudi royals, indeed most of the ME, in an unstable position.

Everything they wanted, and said they would do, in fact.

We are not totally safe either. We live in a dangerous world. I believe that the terrorists have bigger fish to fry than Canada, but I don't think that is because they like us any more than they like the USA or Britain.

25. Clearly no one on this board is old enough to remember Air India
Flight 182 ... does 329 innocent people (incl. 278 Canadians)murdered mid-flight on June 23, 1985 by a cell of Sikh religious separatists/terrorists operating in Canada ring a bell?

Air-India Flight 182 mirrors, in many ways, the attacks of Sept. 11. In both cases, religious extremists used innocent airline passengers to strike at governments they hated.

'Nuff said.

27. YUP
.
.
.

As we are today, I sort of doubt it,

but if the likes of Harper or any other pro-USA enthusiasts get a majority in our government - look out.

When the USA did that ban on our beef, I think we should have done as Japan(?) does and inspected all cattle, and gone after other world markets, - the same when they (the US) dings us on our steel and our lumber - just find other markets and to heck with them.

As for our Petroleum products and our Hydro that some previous government commited us to sell to the US, - I think we should get some legal eagles in there to absolve us of this commitment of OUR natural resources to the most war-mongerning country in the world.

Canada could be the greatest country in the world - one big problem - our next door neighbor.

ahem -

On the lighter side

And God Created Canada

Finally a joke that explains what it's like to be Canadian..

Once upon a time in the Kingdom of Heaven, God went
missing for six days. Eventually, Michael the archangel
found him, resting on the seventh day. He inquired of God,
"Where have you been? "

God sighed a deep sigh of satisfaction and proudly pointed
downwards through the clouds, "Look Michael, look what
I've made." Archangel Michael looked puzzled and said,

"What is it?"

"It's a planet," replied God," and I've put LIFE on it. I'm
going to call it Earth and it's going to be a place of great
balance. Balance? inquired Michael.

Northern Europe will be a place of great opportunity and
wealth while Southern Europe is going to be poor;
the Middle East over there will be a hot spot.
Over there I've placed a continent of white people and
over there is a continent of black people," God continued,
pointing to different countries. "This one will be extremely
hot and arid while this one will be very cold and covered in ice."

The Archangel, impressed by Gods work, then pointed to
a large landmass in the top corner and asked, What's that one?
Ah, said God. That's Canada, the most glorious place on Earth.
There are beautiful mountains, lakes, rivers, streams and an
exquisite coastline. The people from Canada are going to be
modest, intelligent and humorous and they're going to be f
ound travelling the world. They'll be extremely sociable, hard
working and high achieving, and they will be known throughout
the world as diplomats and carriers of peace.

I'm also going to give them super-human, undefeatable
ice hockey players who will be admired and feared by all who
come across them.

Michael gasped in wonder and admiration but then proclaimed;

"What about balance, God? You said there will be BALANCE!"

God replied wisely.

"Wait until you see the loud-mouth bastards I'm putting next to them...."

BUT ... as I originally said, something like, "You Canadians are not really our friends etc. and what are you doing here in DU anyway?"

I do not find this joke ... an obvious "anti-American" slam ... funny in the least!

Any takers, huh?

C'mon guys! Hit me with your best shot!

32. I thought it was funny,
not hilarious maybe, but funny. And I'm an American, have been all my life. I did not find it offensive and it has, unfortunately, a good bit of truth to it. We do tend to be loud and obnoxious, maybe the word bastard was a bad choice. But if you've ever been in another country, you can sure spot Americans there by their behavior. Try to keep in mind, MM, that is was a "joke" and much of the premise of DU is to evoke humor to open people's eyes to the truth. And you know what they say about people who can't take a joke.....

30. Toxins from Goose Bay airbase may be spreading, DND warns
HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, NFLD. - Goose Bay farmers have been warned not to drink their well water for three years after scientists discovered that toxins from a former U.S. airbase may be spreading.

Department of National Defence scientists asked farmers this week to use the town water supply while they monitor the flow of contaminants through soil and groundwater outside the base.

The province has also frozen new leases for three years to allow time for the study.

"We need to get a complete understanding of the type and nature and the extent of the contamination that might exist in that area," Holmer Berthiaume, the department's director of environmental protection said.

33. Wow!
Thanks Ironflange. Much appreciated!

Enufalready ...

I repeat, I find this joke "not funny in the least."

If you do not find it offensive then you must not be paying attention. This is not a slap against Bush ... (something that I would definitely agree with and welcome!!!)

No, this remark is painted with a much broader brush.

I do not know what kind of American you are, Enufalready, I do not know what your background or socio-economic level is exactly ... but speaking for myself ... I personally am not the least bit "loud and obnoxious" ... and have never had a problem while traveling to different countries re being embarrassed by my fellow countrymen.

Perhaps we travel in different circles, I do not know.

Furthermore, you could not be more incorrect. The "premise" ... or "much of it", as you stated, is NOT to evoke "humor to open peoples eyes to the truth." Most of us in here already know what the truth is. Why else do you think we are in here?

This forum is about promoting Democratic candidates, and doing all that we can to help them get elected ... through intelligent conversation, research, volunteerism, fund raising, activism, you name it!

Not silly jokes from some (not all) Canadians that Skinner has so generously allowed in here.

Whew!

Feels good to get all this off my chest, let me tell you! And what's more ... getting all riled up in here, sure beats thinking about the damned Repub Convention!!!

Ciao! ~ MM

34. Glad To Have You Back
If we can't accept criticism then what the heck.
I, personally did not find it funny. When I read it I felt uncomfortable.
Quite often it picks on the weakest in our society, but sometimes it is to make people aware of their biases. Personally I find it cheap.
If you could put yourself in the position where everything Bush does affects you, but you don't have a say in it, then maybe you could understand some of the frustration.
Just think of us as those lefties up north. Maybe socialists.
Again.
Welcome back.
Everyone needs a conscious.

Thanks Chimo, but can't stay!

Should never have come back in the first place, twit that I am. Have company coming to spend about 10 days with us soon ... and am busy as all get out getting ready for them.

Ahem! Canadian_Moderate ...

What happened to your oh, so telling "sig-line?" Huh? Huh?

You know the one, the one that stated:

"We Canadians live in a blind spot about our identity. We have very strong feelings about who we aren't but only weak ones about who we are."

And my absolute favorite part:

"We're passionate about what we don't want to become but oddly passive about what we should be."

As you said " ... we're just a little insecure etc."

Your problem, not mine! And allow me to let you in on a little secret, the way to build yourself up ... will never be accomplished by putting someone else down!

As was done in that so called "joke!"

And to think, you Canadians (well ... a great many of you at least) are always just busting your buttons with pride about being so non-racist, fair-minded, all-round nice guys!

Now, that, to me really IS a joke!

Gotta run! Ciao! ~ MM

Typical of any country that borders onto a much more powerful neighbour.

We're little servants to the mighty USA and we really want you guys to like us, but let us have us fun.;-)

I agree the joke is not that funny, but need to get all defensive. The fact is the Americans are known around the world for being loud, abrasive and opinionated. Have a nice Labo(u)r Day weekend!
