One of the many reasons I love Canada
OTTAWA, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin apologized on Tuesday for blasphemy during a nationally televised meeting on health care reform -- but only after his aunt told him that his mouth should be washed out with soap.

Martin, sitting at a table with the heads of the country's 10 provinces, could clearly be heard muttering "Jesus Christ!" after a presentation by Manitoba premier Gary Doer.

An embarrassed prime minister opened the second session of the meeting by apologizing profusely, saying he had in fact been reacting to a note passed to him by a member of staff.

"I have two aunts .... and during the break one of my aunts called me and essentially pointed out that I had used inappropriate language and suggested a bar of soap," he said.

1. Then there's the Trudeau story (true)...
He once exclaimed "Fuck off!" to a group of hostile parliamentarians (off mike, but audible). Later on he told the press he'd said "'Fuddle duddle' or something like that."

For years afterward you could buy t-shirts with Trudeau's mug on them and FUDDLE DUDDLE underneath in large letters... someone needs to do the same for Crashcart!

:toast:

6. If I recall, Fuddle Duddle was actually recorded in Hansard...
the official transcript of Parliament.

3. I agree, just watched it on CTV newsnet and it is a hoot...
"Little Paul, that's what we call him" said Aunt Claire who called him on the carpet for his "swearing". I think I really like Aunt Claire, lol.

4. speaking of little Paul

We were watching him last night, and at one point the co-vivant said: Did you see Martin's face in that last shot? He's sitting there thinking "I could have been a bank president. I could be sitting in my office in Zurich right now, or drinking a cup of coffee in my chalet looking out over the Alps ...".
