1. No, swimming in the sea was completely unheard of
before the invention in the 20th century of neoprene. Any pictures you may see of people swimming at the seaside are obvious fakes. The development of seaside resorts in the 19th century was purely because people liked the sound of waves, rather than a crazy desire to immerse themselves.

3. That would be unusual in summer
It's true that it's very rare for anyone to go swimming outdoors in winter; but people still walk on beaches.
