The elephant in the living room: Why Dems, reporters say they won’t touch the sex

Dems, reporters weigh in on avoiding Gannon sex issue

By John Byrne | RAW STORY Editor

Congressional Democratic staffers and reporters gave varying answers in conversations with RAW STORY today over why both Democrats and the mainstream press had shied away from the more lurid aspects of a story involving a disgraced White House reporter–namely that he was selling himself for $200 an hour on the Internet.

Both the reporters and the Democratic staff declined to go on the record by name when discussing the sexual aspects of the story.

A senior House aide connected with the push for an inquiry into how Gannon got access to the president and potentially a memorandum naming a CIA agent said he believed Democrats had steered away from the issue because they felt it hindered the story’s ability to make it into the mainstream press.

“The reason that people don’t want to talk about the sex angle in the story is that we all know that the mainstream media will not pick up the story,” the aide said.

19. How did the repugs respond to the BJ & the Blue dress?
it's what got Clinton impeached but Democrats can't get traction with this Gannon story.

It's not the sex...how-who got him in!!

13. And the sex is what draws them here.
That's why they put the website pictures into their reports.

3. But the MSM picked up 'blue dress stains' in detail.....
That's just BS...they talked and talked and talked about ol' Billy Boy's details with no sense of prudence.

7. So how come the sex angle was THE STORY on the Clinton administration?
Edited on Thu Feb-17-05 02:58 PM by rumpel
The MSM has always jumped on any sex angle stories, sex sells.
The dems don't want to have it twisted by the repubs into saying the Dems are hypocrites, or that they are "gay bashing" that's all.
As for the MSM, I also think, they want to protect bush, and therewith themselves.

8. Trowling for Sex to smear Clinton ended in fake perjury/Impeachment
The Gannon story may have sex but the real sorry is Presidential press and WH access by a known sexual prostitute.

From there one can question why was he there and was he blackmailing (or being blackmailed) by WH insiders?

14. Yes Sex between the president and the "female" aid
I think this is different. It's like Seinfeld, they have to include "not that there is anything wrong with it"

10. Personally, I think it is because they don't want their sex life out on
the table! The sex issue is NOT the issue though. the issue is that he was committing a crime. Money for sex is a crime. If he was offering his sexual favors to women it would STILL be a crime.

In Colorado the paper used to publish pictures of "Johns" that were arrested for soliciting sex. They never pictured the prostitutes though. I think there is a little fear that Gannon's "Johns" will become the issue.

The media needs to get on the CRIMINAL aspect of him soliciting sex! But I have to admit, our party has been the defender's of homosexuality so it is going to make them take a step back to consider how they want to handle this. Condemning the man for being gay COULD harm the party and they know it. If any of the members of our party are "Johns" it could be EVEN more devastating to those they are trying to recruit.

I don't know how to frame it exactly. The "homosexual" aspect of the case has some pretty serious problems for BOTH sides and they will have to find a way to deal with that.

After Clinton's sexual impeachment I'm sure Dem's are trying to figure out how to take the sex out of this. It's sad really that this is an issue. If he was a terrorist they'd be all over this.

I suspect he is a mercenary but I haven't seen anyone looking into this. We have a whole lot of mercenaries over in Iraq right now and they are currently undergoing some fire for their abusive behavior toward the Iraqi people. if someone could connect Gannon/Guckert to THAT the story would be all over the place.

I have to say though, it appears to me as if the media is being told by both sides that they can't run with this story and I think it is because of those damn ethics rule changes. Investigations now have to be done on the sly to make sure there is enough time to perform them. Evidence collection takes time and the Republican's ethic's rule change took that time away from any member of Congress that publicly declares there has been a crime committed.

12. No, the true story is Dubya's buying a propaganda hack,
and giving him access to the press corps.

The rest is diversion.

16. SEE THE NASHUA ADVOCATE for more on this story.
We've been covering it -- hard -- as we take a brief (brief!) hiatus from election reform stories.

This one's so important we can't not cover it.

Our last four Gannongate stories can be found at this link.

18. Yeah it doesn't count as sex I guess
unless it's a gay pedophile going after kids with cancer. As long as he was in the Jackson Five. Then it's NEWS. If that story was any f'ing creepier I don't know..how about..

Laci Peterson (he kills the wife and unborn baby to continue to have sex with the mistress) come on-all they report is SEX.

Has anybody ever watched CSI-sex, death, sex, how about Special victims unit-all SEX crimes..sex is the meat and potatoes of Teevee.

The reason they msm don't want to report it is because....drum roll please...it might threaten their access to BUSH. Gotta be pro-Bush, gotta side with the mandate. And look what happened to CBS news and Rather et all with they DARED to report something anti-Bush. Look what they did when a CNN honcho dared to make a public comment (in private but overheard) that it looked like the troops in Iraq were targeting the press.

I suppose a President's blow job never made the evening news. OH WAIT a minute Democrats are different. That's the answer.

It's all lies.

20. OK I'm pissed!
If the democrats can't get a f*cking spine on this one, I've lost all hope for the party. They should be going for the jugular. Taking no prisoners - JEEZUS! Here's sweet juicy payback staring us right in the face and they're gonna let it slip away.
