Let's call HAVA what it truly is: "Hack Ameria's Vote Act "
Edited on Sun Apr-02-06 12:44 AM by Amaryllis
Would that be a good way to frame it? Or does that just make us sound like wingnuts? Conspiracy theorists? Just wonderin'...

"Help America Vote Act" is kinda like the Clear Skies Initiative, or the Healthy Forests Initiative...the name is a lie and it does exactly the opposite of what it claims to do.

So how about we call it what it is instead of by its euphemistic name?

4. Thank you, but I can't take credit for it. I heard someone else say it

somewhere, but can't remember who or where! It struck me at the time, and I thought it might help get the message out if it doesn't just make us sound wingnutty. (Is that a word?):)

5. That's good, but there may not be a need to change the name at all!

HELP America Vote Act (because one person/one vote just ain't gonna get the job done!)

I don't know about you, but I don't need any of their "help", I can vote just fine without the feds, Congress, EAC, ITAs, and the rest of the e pluribus Bozo ad infinitum.

6. And we certainly can vote just fine with no vendors! Unless it's the
vendors selling pens and paper.

7. Peace Patriot called it the "Help America Vote for bush Act"
Edited on Sun Apr-02-06 01:44 AM by nicknameless
On edit: Yours is more accurate, since it's more generalized.

Every time these people claim to be doing one thing, of course, they're actually doing the exact opposite.
You're certainly correct that this is no different than their "Healthy Forests" or "Clear Skies" bs.

:grr:

Used to walk by their office every day, it was in the same park as my old company.

Chills ran down my spine.

10. I like it, and I am sick and tired of worrying about how we sound.
If we tell the truth, and keep telling the truth, and KEEP, KEEP, KEEP telling the truth, their lies become weaker and more obvious under the light of truth.

21. Yes, AND I do think about framing in terms of opening people's eyes
to what is happening. Some frames are much more effective than others in getting people to take a look at the problems in our electoral system. That's why I asked the question in the post about the framing issue.

"Throw Diebold, ES&S and all election theft machines into 'Boston Harbor' NOW!

This thread could use a few nominations!
This particular petition goes to the Committee where this bill has been stuck for years, so it's kind of important!

There are over 160 co-sponsors but unless it gets to the floor, none of them or anyone else in the House, can even vote on it.

It's the best bill of this type in Congress at the moment."

12. Yeah, I called it that: The "Help America Vote for Bush Act."
And that's what it will always be to me. That's the truth. That's what it IS. That's what Tom Delay and Bob Ney designed it to be.

I've struggled with suggestions that this issue should be non-partisan. I understand the arguments. And I am sure that many, many Republican votes for Kerry were stolen and switched to Bush. They have a beef, too. Their party has been hijacked by the Bush junta. But still. IT WAS OUR PARTY, OUR **MAJORITY** VOTERS, OUR WONDERFUL ELECTION ACTIVISTS, AND OUR CANDIDATES WHO GOT SHAFTED--and are still getting shafted, and will be shafted in 2006.

It would be smart strategy to go with the general "Hack America Vote Act." It's very descriptive. It also has a nice sound, like a machete (hack/act).

Go with it.

My struggle is my struggle. Goddamned Republican shaft-the-poor, destroy-the-New-Deal, lethal-injection, corporate-ass-kissing, Reagan-Bushites!

20. Help America vote for Bush act is too limited. It's also help America
vote for Chuck Hagel, Tom Delay, Norm Coleman, Saxby Chambliss, probably ARnold, Jeb, Ken Blackwell, and who knows how many others.

14. Yawn
That's a nice piece of red meat to feed the :bounce: adolescent :bounce: members of the choir.

But since you mentioned framing, I'm assuming you want to convey something to the uninitiated.

In that case, as we've been discussing to the tune of 125+ posts here; http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=203&topic_id=420067&mesg_id=420067
there may be much better ways to introduce the notion of an insecure voting system.

You ask, "does that just make us sound like wingnuts? Conspiracy theorists?". Only to some of the people who have no awareness of the problem. The exact ones we need to inform.

But it's your bullet. And your foot.

15. "Helping ourselves to America's Votes Act" is too awkward.
I still like your "Hack America's Vote Act"

Language is powerful. Too many Americans have a three-second attention span.
Those, who won't take the time to listen to the full breakdown on election fraud, WOULD BE able to hear four little, compelling words.

"Hack America's Vote Act"

22. Just got a HAVA grant in Austin
Not much of one, but the requirements of recipients are to teach twenty+ handicapped people to use the handicap accessible voting machines and to inform them of their voting rights. The grant money goes for supplies, equipment rental.

I'll be the one doing this and feel it is important. When in training for precinct judge, we were taught how help handicap voters use the equipment, just in case, but that it had not been used once in Travis County.

And I do not think that handicap people would generally vote Republican.

I know HAVA isn't much, but this is good.

24. It's perfect. It can't possibly make us sound like wing-nuts
because it contains the truth.

It makes us sound witty and adorable. :-)

Besides, "help America vote" is a condescending title. Almost as if we're a bunch of three year-olds getting assistance to go potty. And I'm sure that was no mistake, as BushCo had every intention of flushing our votes.
