Ukrainians to Vote in Presidential Runoff

November 20, 2004 · Ukraine is preparing for a presidential runoff election Sunday. The opposition, bolstered by many students, charges that vote-rigging stole the original election from its candidate. They're threatening mass protests if he doesn't win the second round. NPR's Lawrence Sheets reports.

The Ukrainian community in Australia has called on the federal government to support calls for a review into the weekend Ukrainian presidential election.

The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO) urged the government to back growing international calls for a review into allegations of massive voter fraud during the election.

Tens of thousands of people have been protesting the vote after the apparent victory of the government candidate.

With nearly all the votes counted, Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich led opposition candidate Viktor Yushchenko by nearly three percentage points, according to the Central Election Commission.

AFUO president Stefan Romaniw said indications of massive voter fraud represented a dark day for Ukrainian democracy.
