Phillip Roth's Plot Against America
Anyone else read it? I thought it was really top-notch: it's a kind of alternate reality story in which Charles Lindbergh is elected president instead of FDR, and the US takes the side of Nazi Germany.

Whoa!!!

I'm curious about the ending though -- not sure what I think.

1. No, but I plan to.
My husband heard the author interviewed on NRP and decided we needed to read it (however, we are just finishing up a move and selling our other house and we can't even find the books we have at this point).

2. It's brilliant.
It's one of Roth's best. And I thought it was extrememely topical.

I liked the idea of him putting "Phillip Roth" in the book.

3. I haven't - too much of a rip-off of others' ideas
Phillip K. Dick, Harry Turtledove, et. al.

Roth just seems like a plagiarist.

4. Ah, but you see...
he's brilliant. There are only so many ideas -- what matters is the execution.

Check it out before dismissing it.

6. Haven't read it yet, but I want to
In fact, I think it would be a great selection for the book club someone else suggested in this forum.

7. It's excellent
and very scary. Obviously Philip Roth has been paying attention to the Bush Regime.

8. I've read it. It's bone-chilling.
I especially liked the way he so accurately portrayed Lindbergh's demagoguery -- breaking complex issues into false dichotomies (vote for Lindbergh or vote for war).

9. I liked it. I just finished reading American Pastoral last night
by him. That one was real wacky but I liked it also.

10. SmokingJacket, I think you're right. It's a very good novel.
Imaginative and interesting and politically charged.

Roth's been a favorite of mine for a hell of a long time.

Ever since "Goodbye, Columbus."
