LET THE FURY HAVE THE HOUR by ANTONINO D'AMBROSIO (Joe Strummer bio)
New from Nation Books!
In book stores everywhere.

Nation Books has just published "Let Fury Have the Hour: The Punk Rock
Politics of Joe Strummer" by Antonino D'Ambrosio.

LET FURY HAVE THE HOUR
The first serious examination of the extraordinary life of Joe
Strummer, the legendary lead singer of the Clash.

“Were it not for the Clash, punk would have been just a sneer, a safety
pin, and a pair of bondage trousers,” writes Billy Bragg, and
documentarian/activist D’Ambrosio proves it with this gathering of
skillfully selected articles and essays on Clash front man Joe Strummer
(1952-2002), from the likes of Lester Bangs, Chuck D, Greil Marcus and
D’Ambrosio himself.
--From Publisher's Weekly review, 11/8/04

"Joe was speaking about things he saw in his life-the things right in
front of his face that no one wanted to talk about-and taking his
message around the world...Public Enemy is an American group but we
address the same issues-political, social, musical-on an international
level. I learned the importance of that from Joe Strummer."
--From the preface by Chuck D

Let the Fury Have the Hour collects articles, interviews, essays, and
reviews that chronicle Strummer's life both as a musician and a
political activist. Included are original essays and interviews by
Antonino D'Ambrosio, alongside contributions from Peter Silverton,
Billy Bragg, Ann Scanlon, Lester Bangs, Sylvie Simmons, Charlie
Bertsch, Greil Marcus, Amy Phillips, Joel, Schalit, and others.

Antonino D'Ambrosio is a writer, filmmaker, photographer and musician.
He is the founder and director of La Lutta New Media Collective, a
media activism and documentary film production group based in New York
City. His writing has appeared in The Nation, The Progressive, Monthly
Review, Color Lines, the New Labor Forum and other publications.

3. Thanks for the Christmas gift suggestion
Strummer is my S.O.'s #1 Rock God.

He went to all of Joe's last US appearances (Philadelphia, Hartford and NYC), to the point where we joked that there should be a restraining order out on him. At the Hartford one, he got backstage, got all the Mesquelaro (sp?) autographs, and as Joe was signing his poster (on SO's back) he told Joe that he had seen all the concerts. "You drove all the way from Philadelphia? Are you mad?" My boy cherishes that moment.

All of the songs we sing to our cat are Clash songs (such as "Safe European Cat"), hell, we even named our first cat "Clash". He even has a romantic song he sings for me to the tune of London Calling, renamed "Pattie Nagging". He cries every time he hears another Clash song being used in an ad.

I am SO IN GOOD with this book (if he doesn't order it for himself first).

4. Isn't that the coolest that they would invite people backstage
like that - not just women, but FANS. That's Joe in my avatar, btw.
He was the nicest man - I can't believe he's been gone almost two years now.

5. I met Mick Jones once and he talked about politics for about 20 minutes
without letting me get a word in. It was funny. My ears were ringing so bad from the show I couldn't hear half of what he said. I saw him again about six months later at a show in another city 500 miles away from where I met him. I was in the front row and in the middle of a song he walked over and nodded and said hello because he recognized me.

6. Amazing isn't it. Ray Jordon recognized me almost a year
after the first times I met him. (their security - he's in the movie Hell10) Mick called me a communist because I hadn't seen E.T.

7. Mick Jones & the Clash love the movies.
Edited on Fri Dec-03-04 08:29 PM by AP
So many Clash and B.A.D. lyrisc refer to movies and I've heard Mick Jones talk in interviews about movies hundreds of times.

It would be hard to make a complete list of all the movie references:

- "Man dies. First real. People ask, "What's the deal? This ain't how it's supposed to be."

- Not only is Charlie Don't Surf inspired by Appocalypse Now, it opens with the guitar making sound of the hellicopter blades, which is exaclty how the movie starts. Genius.

- "I thought I saw Lauren Bacall...in a car jam"

- "Honey, is that Montgomery Cliff?"

- One Emotion is about Roger Moore's terrible acting.

- "Smoking in a dark cinemea/see the bad go down again" (Death is a Star)

8. We will hook up again on December 22 - i have some
pictures to post and some stories to tell and I want others to do the same. You are quite knowledgeable about the band, though. I am going to enjoy our conversation.
