Regarding "All the Presidents Spin"
Edited on Fri Dec-17-04 02:37 AM by FDRrocks
Has anyone else read this and seriously rethought thier outlook on the American political system.

I did not think about what the term 'Public Relations' really meant before I read "Propaganda and the Public Mind" by Noam Chomsky, and this book has boosted my alert level to red, regarding this industry.

At the time, did you realize that the Clinton administration was using this tool as strongly as this book says, while it was happening?

I was not politically aware during the Reagan or Clinton years, but internet reading showed me the extent that it was used throughout the Reagan admin. And it was surpassed when I read of incidents in this book.

But Clintons ends always seemed so noble, so I never questioned the means.

This book points out several ways, in the Introduction, that Clinton revolutionized the art of PR in the White House, and one question came to my mind.

Did Clintons use of spin and public relations invite the massive attack Gingrich and the GOP launched on him?

That's all I want to know. I was only 9 when Clinton was placed in office, and while my gramps wore a frown while we watched the recording on our corded-remote VCR, I smiled cause I knew he was a good man.

Does the backlash against Democrats that is happening right now relate to the use of PR we used during the Clinton admin, and did the backlash against Republicans in Clintons first year relate to Reagans use of PR?

I am in a weird period, my once devout Republican grandfather declared that he wasn't going to vote anymore, because, at this point in time, he cannot discern the truth from any source.

This book is hurting my already deep concern for our democracy. I will tell anyone that asks about American democracy that we are fucked, and fucked by corporate strategists.

1. i don't know if the linked article below, will give you or yourgrandfather
a better understanding of the use of spin now in this bush administration. It is an article by Michael Avery published by Online Journal. This is the link:

http://www.onlinejournal.com/Commentary/121704Arvey/121704arvey.html

I hope it helps you understand the bush administration use of spin and their use of language.

(As far as Clinton and the use of spin,i don't recall Clinton being a spinner, but i do recall the republicans laying every mud on him that they possibly could...and Newt Gingrich who once admitted early on in his reign that Mein Kampf was one of his bibles, going after anything and anyone that smelled liberal, anti Mein Kampf, or democratic to him.)
