I just finished watching the first series of Tales of the City, which I enjoyed, but I have a question, which people who have read the book may be able to enlighten me on.
The question is about the relationship between Anna Madrigal and Mona, since Anna appears to be much fonder of Mona than a landlady usually is about a tenant. At first I thought Anna was sexually attracted to Mona, but when she took up with Halcyon and seemed so fond of him, I decided that that couldn't be it. Then I noticed how crushed she was when Mona moved out, and I thought that perhaps Mona was a daughter she had once given up for adoption and been reunited with. Then came the revelation that Anna used to be Andrew, and then, in the episode with Dorothy's parents, the revelation that Mona never knew her father. Finally, in the second to the last scene, when Anna realizes that Halcyon has probably died and will not be attending her party, she is overjoyed to learn that Mona wants to move back in.
So are we to understand that Anna is Mona's transgendered father? That's my conclusion, but does the book make it clearer?
