George Lucas f**ks with the original Star Wars trilogy.....again

.....(snip).....

The history of the immeasurably popular sci-fi series has been marked with several “special editions” of the movies, both in theaters and on home video, each with changes, additions and omissions by Lucas that have enraged the “Star Wars” faithful. These changes are too numerous to recount here, but one example is the controversial gun duel between Harrison Ford’s Han Solo and an alien bounty hunter named Greedo, in which the instigator of the fight is reversed in the revised film.

On September 16, Lucas releases yet another version of the films, this time on the high-definition Blu-ray platform, and with the new discs come new changes.

The most controversial change was recently made to the climactic scene in “Return of the Jedi.” In the original trilogy, Darth Vader rescues his son (spoiler alert) Luke Skywalker from certain death at the hands of the evil Emperor. Vader famously—and silently—picks up the Emperor and hurls him to his ultimate demise. That’s how it happened … until now. According to reports, the Blu-ray version of “Jedi” besmirches Vader’s silent triumph with one simple word: “Noooooooooooooooo!”

Lucasfilm has confirmed this, stating: “Yes – Darth says NO.” ..........(more)

3. I've been suckered into giving Lucas too much of my cash already.
I'll just keep watching the version I already own.

4. Why won't Lucas just leave it alone?
Maybe it's because he hasn't done anything truly noteworthy since Star Wars.

Endlessly piddling with these films is becoming pathetic.

6. Seriously, and so much of it is stupid and pointless
Insert a scream into one edition, only to remove it in the next one, etc.

Surely this warrants an entry in the next DSM.

16. Maybe to make ever more money
There's a lot of Star Wars fanatics that want to own ever variation of the thing, and are willing to pay the money.

I never saw what was so great about it in the first place.

5. I guess he once again had to wait for technology to match his vision
and until 2001, there was no tech available to dub a voice into a film :eyes:

10. What I want to know is,
will he release the Original Release (Han shoots first) on Blue Ray?

Really, would Casablanca be a better movie if Major Strasser drew and fired on Rick, before Rick shoot him?

Take Han away from shooting first, and you take away the image that he really is a mercenary who might take the money and run before the final battle - there is no redemption in returning if all you are is a loveable rogue.

Makes me wonder who really wrote Episode IV.

12. Look for Star Wars Classic someday
In which the original film is repackaged. I got taken in with the first go around in the late 1990s (actually I did enjoy watching the movies again in the theater - this time with my wife). Since then I have not kept up with the various changes. I still own the original VHS tapes - I got to figure they will be worth something someday (just kidding).

13. Solo's cold-blooded killing of Greedo was a classic.
When Lucas changed it, it pissed me right off.

14. If he is going to add something,
he should add some fart noises during the Luke/Leia kiss. If he is going to disappoint, he should at least make us laugh.

15. I'm at heart kind of a nerd
But I never really got into Star Wars. And he owns it, so I guess he can do with it what he wants. And the old versions will always exist.

both in the theaters and on new video formats.

21. Who else loved Pizza the Hutt lol
Ever since seeing Space Balls and that scene where someone eats a piece of pepperoni taken off of the cheese dripping body of Pizza the Hutt, I can't take the movies seriously at all. But the original start wars was absolute magic when I saw it at the perfect age of 14. I've re-watched it as an adult and it was really just meh.

I agree with the above posters. Lucas is ensconced in his compound tinkering with his invention, and its a money making exercise too. The choice of that horrible actor to play the young Vader finished it for me.
