Is this hate speech?
http://www.thegodmovie.com/

because in summer of 92 when i said i was catholic people at school made fun of me and threw rocks at me,this was during the whole waco wacko thing which i think helped instill hate like the nazi book the eternal jew instilled hate against Jews.

I think the book should stop being advertised or people might start again perpetuating hate crimes against me.

1. I don't understand?
I've seen the advertisement. From my understanding it's a documentary movie, not a book. I read a bit on the site and it said the documentary is by a former fundamentalist Christian who lost his faith once he did research into the mythology of Jesus. The documentary is supposed to be the equivalent of Michael Moore's Bowling for Columbine and F9/11, and is supposed to contain interviews with religious leaders asking "tough questions".

I don't see what is wrong with it, other than it has set out from a rather bias perspective and is going to end up alienating a lot of people as a result. Typically when that happens people just become more set in their ways, rather than getting them to reevaluate their beliefs and views.

I'm sorry what happened to you in school - believe me I know what it is like to be harassed as a child. It is horrible. However, I don't think this was done from the prospective to cause people to hate Christians, on the contrary I think it was written for Christians to be challenged about their own beliefs.

2. It doesn't look like hate speech to me. And in this country, people can
advertise whatever book or movie they want--even hateful ones. Pat Robertson gets ov tv every week and spews hate.

3. Is what hate speech?
The fact that someone took the time to give back a little to the religious fanatics.---they can't handle the truth.

11. Mr.
I want nothing to do with you---You posted something that was definitely untrue, and misinformed --you then seem to want to get people to break the law for you. I would suggest that you may want to do that on some other site, and perhaps informing yourseld better before posting here.

7. You may want to make yourself more clear
because from my bleacher seat, it kind of looks like you are a troll. Hope I'm wrong, but you seem to be looking for a type of response that you aren't getting yet.

And if you are still Catholic, and your friends are putting out hate due to the pedophilia/gay thing, you are probably not going to be further hurt by this documentary.

8. How is expressing those opinions hate speech?
Although many fundamentalist Christians would consder it hate speech to delve into the mythical roots of their own religion, it is most certainly not.

9. There's possible hate speech in the video
The bit where a guy says he wants homosexuals executed. But the movie (I'm not sure what 'book' you're talking about) is against that, not for it.

10. I've seen the movie
It's not a book.

No, it's not hate speech at all. There are basically two threads that run through it. 1) That of the Brian Flemming's lost of faith and how religion has negatively impacted his life along the way, as well as the positive. 2) The evidence for a historical Jesus (or lack thereof, as the case may be).

Nowhere is there hate expressed toward religion in any form in this film. At the most is Brain Flemming's disappointment with religion.

I really suggest viewing it, and I'm sure you can find a copy of the film out there in P2P land if you are unable to afford the $25. If your faith is faltering before you see it the film may give you the courage to ask the hard questions of your religion. If you faith is solid beforehand then you will only feel sorry that Mr. Flemming's life experiences caused him to turn his back on God. Either way, the information presented in relation to the historical accuracy of the Bible can only serve to strengthen your faith by allowing you to dispense with the myth and concentrate on your relationship with God.

I'm so sorry some people chose to commit crimes against you simply for your Catholicism. Unfortunately, we have a strong history of "anti-Papists" in this country. Just another flavor of the many forms of bigotry, prejudice and superstition that have been with us forever. I hope you've been able to put it behind you. If you haven't you might wish to seek counseling. Catholic Charities can help you with this. If you got to their website, you'll be able to locate your nearest local agency.

Shake off all the fears of servile prejudices, under which weak minds are servilely crouched. Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call on her tribunal for every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason than that of blindfolded fear. --Thomas Jefferson

12. Hate speech, what a nasty little movie
Book? It is a movie, and I have seen the advertisement on DU, you should pay a bit more attention when posting. Did you click on the DU advert, then craft this nice little post?

I cannot offer an opinion about the movie without a viewing, you clearly have not viewed the movie given your ignorance, you stated it was a book. How can you raise a provocative question concerning the movies content without actually viewing the movie?

As for your painful childhood memory, where did you grow up? How does the Waco incident create anger against Catholics? And finally, comparing, what seems to be a critical view of fundamental christianity, to Nazi anti-semitism smacks of a tried and true Nazi tactic, baiting.

But again, You and I have not seen the movie. I would reserve judgment until better informed, and would suggest you do the same before posting bait.

Lastly, I feel sorry for you, you proclaimed your Catholicism and someone made fun of you. For the last thousand plus years anyone who declared their atheism would be condemned to death by your lovely church. And in the modern age of reason, our great leader's daddy proclaimed that

Bush Senior: No, I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God.

If you are telling the truth about your childhood years, which I doubt, don't go looking for sympathy among the educated, enlightened, atheists, the Catholic church leaves a trail of blood and misery which rivals the ......., hey lets compare them to the Nazis, weeeeee, how is that for baiting....
