5. No, it was from last week, but Colbert frequently satirizes religion
I think The Daily Show segment "This Week in God" was Colbert's baby.

Colbert Report is ALWAYS worth watching. I used to think it was a bland knock off, but now I usually like it MORE than "The Daily Show".

8. Colbert a Catholic? I'd be shocked. He seems like a freethinker
Colbert really comes off as not just a secularist, but an ACTIVIST secularist. I'd be shocked if he was a "devout" anything. Where did you get that info?

9. He's said it on the show
Edited on Wed Apr-05-06 05:09 PM by catbert836
He jokes about it from time to time. Example:

"So, my next wag of the finger goes to the Orthodox Jews who last week called Nazi Pope Benedict XVI a Nazi. Now, I know I just called him a Nazi, but I'm Catholic. That's MY word. So hands off."

Here's an interview he did with NPR back when he was still on TDS, in which he discusses his beliefs. He's a regular churcgoer, apparently.

10. Let me see
We can all name the people who were pissed off at "That's MY word." Of course they would have to realize it was a referring back to Nazi. Hitler was a Catholic. They supported the Nazis. His humor is so damn good because SO MUCH of it is so subtle. People lose that in the "in your face" stuff he puts out.

6. The Easter Egg story out of the Orthodox tradition
Easter eggs are not just a tradition of the western church; they are found in Orthodox traditions as well. While eggs can be dyed any color, red is by far the most common, and the reason has to do with a legend told about Saint Mary Magdalene.

To the Orthodox, Mary Magdalene was not the "reformed prostitute" portrayed in the west. Rather, she was an educated noblewoman who helped finance the ministry of Jesus and who, after the resurrection, used her social standing to teach the gospel to upper class people who would never have listened to a mere fisherman. She has the title "Equal of the Apostles" because of her importance to the early church.

The egg story tells of her travelling to Rome after the Ascension and being admitted to the court of Tiberius Caesar. At a dinner party, she told the emperor of the miscarriage of justice done by Pilate, and then about how Jesus rose from the dead. Mary picked up an egg from the dinner table to illustrate the idea of resurrection. Tiberius scoffed at the story, saying that a man could no more rise from the dead than the egg in her hand turn red. The egg immediately turned a bright scarlet.

This icon by Br. Robert Lentz, OFM, represents this story.
