Griese Suspended for Taco Remark
You've got to be kidding me

http://www.wptv.com/content/wptvsportsheadlines/story/bob-griese-taco-remark-suspended-espn-nascar-juan/FvVZ30Uqi0u2-cniUWAasA.cspx

ESPN broadcaster Bob Griese has been suspended one week for a remark he made about NASCAR driver Juan Pablo Montoya.

ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz says Griese, the former Hall-of-Fame quarterback for the Miami Dolphins, will not be working a game this week.

Krulewitz says ESPN has spoken to Griese and "he understands the comment was inappropriate."

Are we really this PC?? This is beyond ridiculous

1. Griese is an idiot...
...it was inappropriate and racist...has nothing to do with being or not being PC.

14. Idiotic comparison
Fuzzy Zoeller verified his mean spirited bigotry by following up on the fried chicken comment with a very revealing, ".. or whatever the hell THEY eat."

Griese made one brief comment, in the same subtle fashion that he's used throughout his broadcasting career. It was an attempt at humor, one that didn't work, but it reminds me of the little digs he uses, back and forth, with Nat Moore on Dolphin preseason telecasts and also with his previous ABC partners Brad Nessler and Paul McGuire. Griese is very good at Xs and Os on the college games but otherwise he doesn't take the broadcasts seriously. In this case it got him in trouble.

Far as I know Zoeller didn't have a reputation as a "mean-spirited bigot" up until that incident -- just an ass with a big mouth. How could it be verified? Maybe it just surfaced at that moment.

4. Does anyone actually understand the definition of racism?
He was guilty of stereotyping, not racism. Racism is the hatred of other races and/or the belief that one's own race is superior. Joking that a Hispanic driver was out having a taco doesn't tell me that he hates Hispanics. It tells me he's a simpleton who stereotypes. I am sick of how watered down the use of racism has become.

Bob Griese is a good guy who said a stupid thing.

I love the high and mighty's here at DU---as if they've never said anything stupid.

At least he's a Democrat.

splainin to do, Lucy." Oh no, that wasn't racism either...if Greaseball wasn't from Florida you wouldn't be defending him, end of story.

13. It is a wacky slope
I'm as white as they come but I do enjoy tacos, and fried chicken amd watermelon. I just don't understand why such useage is deemed in racial terms.

15. Yeah. Just like
"Look at that monkey run!" wasn't derogative either...:sarcasm: It might not be racism technically but it sure seems to indicate a biased way of thinking....
