NFL Playoff race
NFC

Division up for grabs
NFC East
X-Philadelphia 10-6 (Denver, @Dallas)
Dallas 9-5
NY Giants 8-6

Wild Card
1-Green Bay 9-5 (Seattle, @Arizona)
2-Dallas 9-5 (@Washington, Philadelphia)
NY Giants 8-6 (Carolina, @Minnesota)
Atlanta 7-7 (Buffalo, @Tampa Bay)

AFC

Divisions up for grabs
AFC East
New England 9-5 (Jacksonville, @Houston)
Miami 7-7
NY Jets 7-7

AFC North
Cincinnati 9-5 (Kansas City, @New York Jets)
Baltimore 8-6
Pittsburgh 7-7

Wild Card
1-Baltimore 8-6 (@Pittsburgh, @Oakland)
2-Denver 8-6 (@Philadelphia, Kansas City)
Pittsburgh 7-7 (Baltimore, @Miami)
Miami 7-7 (Houston, Pittsburgh)
Jacksonville 7-7 (@New England, @Cleveland)
Tennessee 7-7 (San Diego, @Seattle)
NY Jets 7-7 (@Indianapolis, Cincinnati)
Houston 7-7 (@Miami, New England)

X-Clinched playoff spot (Philadelphia)

Notes-This isn't official because I'm not sure if NY Giants are still in the divisional race meaning I'm unsure what happens if both them and Philly are tied at 10-6 or a 3-way tie with Dallas. Also I watched Dallas beat Atlanta so I know Atlanta doesn't get in over Dallas and I'm not sure if they get in over Green Bay if they both end the season 9-7. I didn't take the time to figure out the tie-breakers in those scenarios.

New England and Cincinnati need 1 win to clinch division. Bengals because they swept the division so therefore they have tiebreakers over Baltimore and Pittsburgh.

Green Bay has the top wild card spot in the NFC because they beat Dallas

Baltimore has the top wild card spot in the AFC because they beat Denver

1. +1
It's said that teams peaking late in the season have a better chance of post season success. Philadelphia appears to be one, which should only improve with a healthy Westbrook. I like these guys, and could see them playing New Orleans for the conference.

Is San Diego another?

Green Bay, despite the loss to Pittsburgh?

Teams on the downfall...

Denver, for sure.

Minnesota?

Perhaps but once the playoffs get started you can throw out the records and statistics and things can happen. Plus it's all about match-ups.

Edit-I wanted to add Atlanta is out of it no matter what but it's too late to edit.

6. Exactly...
Philadelphia, for example, is looking a lot better now than earlier in the season. Although anything can happen, I'd rather go into the playoffs on a high note.

17. Green Bay needs to get another kicker
Crosby just isn't getting the job done.

5. The AFC wild card is crazy..I'm pretty sure Baltimore will get in,
but Denver could lose its way out of there, and there are so many damn 7-7 teams right now...I bet an 8-8 team gets in.

7. I don't know if the Giants can win the East
Best they can do is tie Philly's record, and Philly has the head to head. In a three way with Dallas, where each team would be 2-2 against each other and 4-2 in the division, Philly and Dallas would have the better conference records.

Here's an interesting possibility. Dallas and Philly, who play each other in the season finale, could meet again the next week in an opening round game.

8. Correct
the Giants cannot win the division. They have a decent wild card chance if they win out.

9. I thought if the seedings were such that two teams from the same division
were scheduled to meet in the first round, then they'd tweak it a little. But if both wild cards are from the east, there will be an east-east first round match-up somehow.

10. Unless they've recently changed something
the seeding determines the schedule. In 2006 the Pats and the Jets were the #4 and #5, and met in the first round. #6 was the Chiefs, who played the #3 Colts

11. I may be thinking of baseball, because the yankees were the #1 and technically
the Red Sox were 4th being the wild card, but they didn't meet because they keep the teams from the same division playing each other in the first round.

12. Here's how it works
Edited on Tue Dec-22-09 06:40 PM by JonLP24
#1 plays the lower seed from the Wild Card round
#2 plays the higher seed from the Wild Card round

#3 plays #6
#4 plays #5

If the season ended today here's how the AFC playoff picture would look like.

Indianapolis and San Diego have first round byes.

#3 New England plays #6 Denver.
#4 Cincinnati plays #5 Baltimore.

14. The first and last part you got right.
In the middle you say that 3 plays 5 and 4 plays 6.

19. You're giving Denver an awful lot of credit.
They've been in a downward spiral since week 7. But to answer your question (Den/Mia/Ten all 9-7), if Denver wins vs KC they go, if they lose Miami goes, Tennessee is out regardless. However, it could end in an 8 way tie for 2 slots.
