9. Like the ones with all those pure Eastern Bloc amateurs! Putin probably misses those days a lot too
given how relatively mediocre they did this time around.
Personally, I think corporate sponsorship is a good thing in this case. Without it, the only people able to devote such time and effort to their sport would be ones from fairly wealthy families.
3. mad. You have to get the jingoistic bullshit out of your head.
Put it this way. When Ohio State comes to Iowa City in November, I sincerely hope it's a close, competitive contest for all to enjoy. BULLSHIT! I hope we kick the living shit out of the Bucks. The nature of sports.
8. I think the nationalistic stuff has a place - sports are about taking a side
and talking a little trash (among lots of other things of course). However, when it gets to the point of "Our skater won so your country sucks in every possible respect and I hope you all die!" it's too much...
10. You seem to be the only one here, so far, that got the point of my rant.
The Olympics, while it is noted are based on countries, the goal of the Olympics is to bring countries together, not divide them with nationalistic bs.
For one thing, athletes qualify through their own nation. The Austrians would have a dozen or more ski jumpers if it were done individually. Simone Ammann couldn't even try for a third goal in team jumping because Switzerland had only one other competitor.
My beef is the opposite. The jerseys should be more blatantly nationalistic, like the old days. Team events are fine in that regard but otherwise it's often difficult to distinguish.
