MLB reportedly fears Bonds at risk of conviction
NEW YORK -- Major League Baseball is looking into Barry Bonds' relationships and activities, according to a report in the New York Daily News.

Citing anonymous baseball sources, the newspaper reported in its Sunday editions that baseball security officials believe Bonds might be at risk of conviction over allegations of tax fraud involving undeclared income from memorabilia sales. However, baseball investigators are having difficulty conducting their own probe because "a federal investigation changes everything," a source told the Daily News.

One official from another team told the Daily News that the San Francisco Giants' front office "is starting to freak out" over Bonds' problems.

"I think they realize they've let the situation get away from them," the official told the Daily News.

I'm not sure how much I trust the NYDN, but if this is true, it couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

3. Next, get McGwire et al.
Liars, cheats, scoundrels who tried to claim records set by honest ballplayers.

They should all be locked up. Scum.

8. there's something basically wrong with MLB's approach

to the steroid issue. they've busted a couple of bench players, and about a dozen minor leaguers. they're obviously shying away from the big names in the game.

5. Saw that MLB is denying this story...then again, they've denied any
players have been taking steroids.

6. a bit of a non-denial denial, though. isn't it?
NEW YORK -- Major League Baseball says it's not investigating Barry Bonds but merely monitoring the ongoing government probe involving the San Francisco Giants slugger.

The New York Daily News, citing unidentified major-league sources, reported on Sunday that "MLB security officials are convinced that Bonds may be at risk of conviction over allegations of tax fraud and are conducting their own probe into Bonds' relationships and activities."

"There's nothing new. There's no investigation," baseball spokesman Rich Levin told The Associated Press on Sunday. "Nothing has changed. We're monitoring the federal investigation, as we have from the very beginning."

Bonds' ex-girlfriend, Kimberly Bell, testified in March to a federal grand jury that Bonds told her in 2000 that he had begun taking steroids. The San Francisco Chronicle reported, citing two unidentified sources, that Bell also testified that Bonds gave her $80,000 in cash in 2001 in separate $9,000 payments to help her purchase a house in Scottsdale, Ariz.

10. Now I see why Sandy Alderson left MLB for the Padres
He must know that MLB will come out looking real bad. I always doubted the alleged reason he left, i.e., no opportunity to become commissioner. Well maybe that was part of it. But he obvioulsy wanted to distance himself from MLB, because MLB management is looking more and more foolish and amateurish as the days go by.
