Temple not going to any bowl is simply the biggest farce in NCAA football history.
This is an eight-win team, people. Seriesly. They even beat BCS-bound UConn. And the don't even get picked for the Toilet Bowl? :wtf:

1. Heh! "BCS-bound UConn"
Whoda thunk several years ago that we would hear that phrase!

2. Seriously?
I thought they added more bowls too. I always figured, mathmatically they should be able to get nearly every 6-6 (or better) into a bowl. I even figured some years, in situations where conferences are very top heavy, that a couple of 5-7 teams could get picked.

3. Read it and weep
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=rivals-1161695

Despite finishing the season with an 8-4 record and a win over Big East champion Connecticut, Temple’s football team learned Sunday that it did not receive a bowl bid.

At halftime of Temple’s basketball game against Maryland in the BB&T Classic at the Verizon Center, OwlScoop.com and a handful of reporters caught up with Temple athletic director Bill Bradshaw to get his reaction....

“All the fans should understand that the process for the bowls is completely different than the NCAA basketball where there’s boiler plate of criteria. There’s one committee that makes all of those decisions. In bowls, you have five BCS bowls where there is a criteria and a boiler plate and consistency, but for the other 30 bowls, it’s very much a hodgepodge of priorities. Very inconsistent, so I would say to you guys that you might want to ask the bowl in New Orleans why they wouldn’t want Temple there.”...

“No, no. We would have attended a bowl. The answer from the New Orleans Bowl was head-to-head, you lost to Ohio, and you were behind them in the standings. If you trust that that was their major criteria down in New Orleans … if you trust that, then I can’t argue that. I can’t argue that. I’m not 6-foot tall, so if there’s a basketball league for 6-footers, I can’t argue why they won’t let me play even though I think I’m better than some of those guys. So if someone says you didn’t beat them that’s why you’re not going, then you guys can ask those questions.”

4. It does seem like there should be enough bowls by now.
No matter what happens with the weather, no matter the day or the time, if your flight is delayed during the holidays, it seems like there will be a bowl game on the TV at the airport lounge.

5. We could ask the DU Admin to sponsor a bowl
for Temple....

The DU Latte Liberal Bowl...hell, I'd donate a few bucks, and I'm a BCS hater. But, whom would Temple play?

6. Arizona State

which was ruled ineligible despite having six wins, because two came against FCS teams. The sad part is, they had to schedule the second one because San Jose State backed out on them. Isn't being dumped by San Jose State indignity enough?

weren't they like a blown kick away from beating Wisconsin this year?

8. Yes
Also they were a facemask penalty away on Stanford's game winning drive from winning that game. I would say what the Pac-10 officials said about that call but I don't want to be accused of "sniveling" by Upton.

They lost 4 games by a total of 9 points. x(

11. Every team can look to close calls.
When you're a mediocre team, you see how big they can be. ASU was mediocre at best.

10. In other words, they were 4-6 against teams in their own division.
Edited on Mon Dec-06-10 02:42 PM by HuckleB
They knew they were ineligible, but they asked the NCAA for special treatment. Any team that schedules a game with an FCS team, in the first place, leaves itself open to this possibility. Quite frankly, IMO, the NCAA should keep any team that does not have a better than .500 record out of bowl games. ASU barely qualifies as a .500 team. Anyway, with all the farce discussion going on, ASU getting a bowl bid this year would top all the other claimed farces. Heck, Portland State (one of the FCS teams) was only 2-9 this year, mostly playing FCS teams.

12. Could you be any more harsher?
Their argument was it wasn't their fault San Jose St backed out to play Wisconsin for twice the payout. They didn't get it fine. Didn't hurt to try. Plus like the coach said, I'll take a win over Arizona over any bowl game.

13. I'm just being truthful.
Edited on Mon Dec-06-10 02:55 PM by HuckleB
If you can't go .500 against teams in your own division, you've got no business crying to the NCAA. And just because Erickson plays a classic tune to the press and the fans (re: the UA game), AFTER he has already begged for special treatment doesn't change the fact that he asked for special treatment.

15. Not necessarily
Edited on Mon Dec-06-10 03:04 PM by JonLP24
Like I said it didn't hurt to try LOL @ "crying" and "begged" It was just a freakin' appeal. I didn't say it didn't change the fact they tried, in fact I acknowledged. It still doesn't change the fact I would still take the win over Arizona over a bowl game. Lost to Arizona and get a bowl game or beat Arizona? I take beat Arizona.

Plus I'm proud the way they played. 4 losses by a combined total of 9 points indicates they played really well, just couldn't pull it out. The main issue was the kicker who made less than 50% of his field goals this year. Hard to believe he won the Lou Groza Award a couple years ago.

I take it Arizona State is among the teams you hate, hence the words that you use.

I'm sorry the truth hurts. Hate has nothing to do with it, btw. Reality does. Crying and begging is what they did, and it's ludicrous that they did it.

But, yes, this is good for a good

To bewilder, confound, or confuse.

I can't say I'm any of those things though.

Ok-You call it "crying" and "begging"--I call it "file an appeal". Agree to disagree?

14. Now we need a site
Obviously, Texas, Florida, Arizona, etc. are out of the question; this is, after all, the Latte Liberal Bowl. I suggest the L.A. Coliseum, which doesn't have a bowl game of its own.

28. It's across the Bay
Edited on Mon Dec-06-10 07:09 PM by KamaAina
about ten miles. Look for BART (commuter train that crosses the Bay in a tunnel) to be jammed, as it already is on Giants game nights.

edit: Also, the defending World Series champion Giants might well be playing through October and even into November. :-)

Edited on Mon Dec-06-10 04:24 PM by KamaAina
The 2001 Hawai'i team stayed home despite having nine wins and hanging 72 on previously unbeaten BYU. This was the year between the Aloha Bowl and today's Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl. Factoid: The Aloha Bowl and Jeep O'ahu Bowl were moved to the mainland by Lenny Klompus -- who served as communications director for outgoing repuke Gov. Lingle. :eyes:

23. Was that during their Timmy Chang years?
I remember he tried out for the Cardinals but didn't make it. Not sure how his career went after that. I heard he got into some trouble lately, can't remember exactly what it was.

At the time I had a joke. Guy comes into the room, hears a game on, and asks, "What's the score?" "54-48, UH, fourth quarter".

Guy asks, "Basketball or football?" :P
