With Orton ailing, Tebow gets bulk of snaps at Broncos practice
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) Tim Tebow is getting more snaps at practice with starter Kyle Orton nursing bruised ribs and the rookie might even get his first extended action of the season when the Denver Broncos visit Oakland this weekend.

Orton sat out practice Wednesday and interim coach Eric Studesville met with quarterbacks coach Ben McDaniels to determine how much, if any, he'll be able to participate in Thursday's practice.

In his absence, Tebow has been taking the bulk of the snaps with third quarterback Brady Quinn getting some work, too.

Tebow, whom former coach Josh McDaniels selected in the first round of the draft, has made only cameo appearances this season and thrown just one pass so far, a 3-yard TD toss to Spencer Larsen against Kansas City on Oct. 14.

3. This is his chance. Orton is no #1 QB.

4. He certainly played like one this year
3,653 yards, 58.8%, 7.3 YPA, 20 TDs, 9 Ints.

I wish my team had a QB play that well. Well I do. Broncos are my AFC team. Pass defense and an injured Moreno has been the major problems with the team. Also Lloyd has played as well as any receiver in the league this year with him throwing the ball.

6. Well, maybe I'm just spoiled, I admit.
The guy isn't terrible, but if this is a team's #1 QB then I can't see that as a team that's Super Bowl bound. I know Chicago did ok with him, but he's the kind of guy you just want to not lose the game for you, not the type you expect to win the game for you. That mentality alone makes a big difference. When you watch Manning or Brady play you feel excited because you expect that they're going to make something happen. With Orton you're excited when it's not a mistake.

Put a solid team all around him, and sure, he could win regularly, but a team like Denver doesn't have that well rounded game. I'm no fan of Tebow, but I see him as having the potential to be a bigger game changer than Orton will ever be.

Or he could fail miserably as well. :)

8. I think Denver needs a defense
DJ Williams and Champ Bailey are great but the rest of the defense has been giving up a lot of yardage and points(They are in the bottom 5 is pass defense--you can't go the Super Bowl no matter who the QB is, really). Moreno is a great runner when healthy, but Denver doesn't hand off to him enough IMO. Brandon Lloyd is showing what a mistake Washington and San Francisco made by running him out of town but honestly, it isn't like they didn't have a reason to. He wasn't producing and there is a good chance he is a one hit wonder. But his 18 YPC indicates he has amazing speed.

I believe Orton has been solid the last couple of years and he is still young. What is showing is that he is improving and he is far better than his days at Chicago. He only turned the ball over 10 times this year so when I watch Denver play--I'm not thinking "How exciting, he didn't turn the ball over". No it is more like "How exciting he threw for 467 yards and 4 touchdowns".

I'm not sure exactly what you see in Tebow. He had a horrible wind-up release in college where he starts his throwing motion at his waste--something that will hurt him in the NFL with those quick windows. However, I heard he improved his release and McDaniels was impressed how quickly he captured the playbook. His determination is there.

Drafted in 1999.

He isn't making a lot of noise but he still has it. He was all over receivers in the games I've seen him in.

12. I will say he is not as good as he was in his prime

but still very good.

I was very happy when Denver got him because the post-season before that Peyton Manning embarrassed the secondary in the playoffs. Unfortunately Manning embarrassed the secondary again Champ Bailey's first season. Loved the 10 interception season and his performance against Dallas Thanksgiving that year before that which was 2005. It had nothing to do with Dallas, it was one of the few football games I watched that year. I missed all of the playoff games including the Super Bowl in '05.

13. I think Tebow has that "it" factor.
I hate being a position to defend the guy, but he's better coming out college, to me, than Vick was. Yeah, he needs a lot of work, but I feel he has a lot more potential than Orton.

And you have to be careful with the numbers game. The Pats are also last, or close to it, in numerous defensive categories but they keep winning. A few weeks ago we spoke about the Jets offense, and you correctly pointed out that their running game had been good. Yet they still lost, and have had a handful of games where they scored less than 10 points. In that same thread I talked about the Pats defense being shaky, but since the 3rd quarter of the Lions game on Turkey Day the Pats have outscored their opponents 106 to 10. Going strictly by the numbers has burned us both, because there's a spirit that has to be accounted for. Some people have it and some don't. I don't like Tebow's politics, but if I was a player he'd come across as a better leader than Orton would to me, and I think Tebow has that certain fire to him that may make him a better QB than Orton.

Just my opinion, and if you look at how good I'm picking games this year you know how seriously to take it. :)

14. He has to overcome his passing motion
and his desire to take on a linebacker head first.

Vick evades, Tebow goes head first. Sorry---but pro ball linebackers are killers and Tebow won't last long if he thinks he's a running back.

Let's see Tebow run into Briggs or Lewis a few times. Actually, yes, let's see that! :)

16. I think the major thing
Edited on Thu Dec-16-10 08:11 PM by JonLP24
that separates Vick from Tebow at least coming into college was the quicker release and far stronger arm. He had a horrible 3-5 step drop to pass though I'm not sure if Tebow is better in that department. He was in shotgun so much, that he struggled taking snaps under center in the Senior Bowl. He fumbled the snap twice IIRC.

New England is #22 in the defensive pass category I use which isn't great. However what separates them from other teams is the 20 interceptions. Only 1 team has more and that is Philadelphia. I'm not certain how their run defense is but if you're offense is scoring a boat load of points, that can mask a lot of problems. Also the flip side of that is true, a great defense can mask problems on defense. Especially against two of the best pass defenses. Currently Brady leads the league in YPA but a few weeks ago he was around the 10 spot. You really got to account for how well Brady is playing lately. 12.63 YPA against Detroit, 11.24 YPA against NYJ, and 9.23 against Chicago. If any QB put up those kind of numbers, any team would win unless the defense was so bad they were actually outscored. (Why I'm concerned about Jacksonville, great offense, horrible defense). I guess Brady is your point but I don't see Tebow putting up numbers like that--ever. Plus only throwing 4 INTs.

I still think the Jets are great defensively and running game is solid. Sanchez is just 53%, 6.5 YPA, 16 TDs-12 Ints. That is where the Jets need improvement but I seen receivers make several drops against Miami including one that was a touchdown if the receiver caught it. I think they will be a difficult team to face in the playoffs. Their defense will keep games close, it will be up to the offense to do the job but Sanchez is clearly showing himself to be liability.

The team that I think is the most balanced is Baltimore. Top 5 (last I checked) in both defensive categories. They got a QB that throws over 7 YPA, and the run the bull very well. I think #2 behind the Chiefs. I would say Chicago but they don't run the ball as often or as well as Baltimore.

If you had a gun to my head and forced me to pick the AFC winner. I would most likely say New England even I don't like to overreact to something that happened the last few games. But what the New England offense did the defenses of Chicago and the Jets is absolutely shocking to me. Jaw dropping shocking. I rarely get shocked when it comes to football and if he did this against the Denver or Jacksonville defense I wouldn't be shocked. But Chicago and NY Jets? I'm speechless, the way they exposed them like that. If they play that way in the playoffs they are unbeatable.

On edit-Pittsburgh is also a well balanced team in major categories.

21. an offensive line wouldn't hurt, either
Orton's taken a lot of hits this year, and they haven't had any kind of rushing game (until the last few games) to take any pressure away from him.

22. So Orton is no Manning or Brady? Who are?
The guy has had a career year. You stick him on a team with a defense that's halfway decent, and an oline that is halfway decent and we are talking about the Broncos as a Super Bowl darkhorse.

Tebow sure as heck aint the answer.
