Big Ten considers renaming the divisions
After the almost-universal dislike of the Legends and Leaders names.

3. I'm surprised they're not considering brand names -- they can bring in some nice money

Just ask the BCS, not to mention the NFL itself. The Coors Lite and Ford Focus divisions, perhaps?

6. Great Plains and Great Lakes.
Emphasis on GREAT. As in DEFENSE. Something the SEC or PAC-10 have no earthly notion of how to play it.

8. Give it a shot, 1go.
God, did Delaney blow it. How much was paid to these "people" to come up with this? I have no idea how to send it to Chicago. I give you permission to do so.

12. Defense?
Curious. When you look at how much SEC teams score, SEC teams, over the past decade, have scored an average of 23.5 points per game in conference games. In compiling a winning record against Big 1? teams for the decade (17-14), the SEC has scored an average of 25.8 points per game. So basically, not only does the SEC have a winning record against the Big 1? this decade, we've scored better against Big 1? defenses than we have SEC defenses. This leads me to a couple of conclusions.

First, your contention - that the Big 1? has GREAT defenses while SEC teams don't - is not borne out by the numbers.
Second, your illusion - that Big 1? defenses are somehow fantastic - stems from Big 1? offenses being not up to par.

I do, however, have some suggestions for your divisions:

Big/Slow
3 Yards/A Cloud of Dust
Overrated/Overestimated
Ohio State/Everyone Else

Oh yeah, just for fun, I decided to run the numbers against the PAC-10. In the past decade, PAC-10 offenses scored an average of 28.5 points per game against other PAC-10 teams and 25.9 points per game against Big 1? teams. Unfortunately for the Big 1?, this did not translate to a winning record against the PAC-10, as the PAC-10 had a 29-17 record against the Big 1?. Hey, that gives me more ideas for division names!

Third/Place
Yellow/Ribbon
Bronze/Metal

Emphasis on THIRD. As in, behind the SEC and the PAC-10.

I thought your post was about current trends - but since you want to try some kind of comeback, here's your follow-up.

Your "source" was some dipstick who didn't know that his source counted games before the SEC was established. You don't get to count a win against the SEC before the SEC was formed. Duh. You also don't get to take credit for any victories by Penn State against the SEC before they joined the Big 1?, and his source does. And, in the interests of honesty, I don't get to count victories by Arkansas or South Carolina against the Big 1? before 1992, and I also have to count the records of former members Sewanee, Tulane, and Georgia Tech during their time in the conference, even though Sewanee is now Divison III and Tulane has traditionally sucked. So here are the historically accurate all-time records of SEC teams against the Big 1?:

Members current since 1932, when the SEC was formed:

Alabama 5-3
Auburn 6-3
Florida 8-4
Georgia 8-1
Kentucky 16-16
LSU 6-4-1
Ole Miss 0-2
Mississippi State 1-1
Tennessee 8-4
Vanderbilt 5-5-1

Since 1992, when they joined the conference:
South Carolina 2-1
Arkansas 0-3

Former members of the SEC:
Sewanee (1932-1940) 0-0
Georgia Tech (1932-1964) 0-1
Tulane (1932-1966) 2-2

That's an overall record of 67-50-2, SEC. Congratulations, Condem. By bringing up all-time records, your winning percentage went from .452 to .429. And you still can't claim that the SEC doesn't play defense.

PAC-10. This conference actually started out as the AAWU (Athletic Association of Western Universities), then added one more a year later, then 2 more in 1964, then two more in 1978.

So: PAC-10 vs. Big 1?

1960-2010
Cal 15-15
Stanford 12-14-3
UCLA 28-21-2
USC 50-15-1
Washington 32-21-1

1962-2010
Washington State 13-19-1

1964-2010
Oregon 13-18
Oregon State 9-14

1978-2010
Arizona 6-14
Arizona State 10-4

All-time record: PAC-10, 188-155-8

Once again: Big 1? is in... Third place. Yellow ribbon. Bronze metal. At least you can look down at the ACC and the Big East.

19. Something simple, like a North/South
although upper/lower region works, I also like the posters idea of Great Lakes/Great Plains division.
