1. A .500 team, or worse, is going to make the NFC playoffs...
and a team with a winning record will be left out.
Those are the rules. It's not fair to the players and coaches that bust their asses to win or the fans that support them, but those are the rules until they're changed otherwise.
I'm in favor of changing the rules so no team at or below .500 will be admitted to the playoffs, and the team that would otherwise play them gets a walkover.
not only is the 8-8 or 7-9 NFC West winner going to be in the playoffs, but they're going to get a home game against a wildcard team with a far superior record such as the Saints or the Giants. I believe that is where a rule change should be made.
A below .500 team making the playoffs has NEVER happened in history. There is no reason to freak out because it will happen this one time. Chalk this one up as life is not fair and get get the fuck over it.
And anything can happen. I certainly don't expect the 49ers to contend for the Super Bowl but they could win a home game in a one-off situation. It wouldn't be the craziest thing that ever happened in the NFL.
A crap team from a crap division will make the playoffs and a quality team like the Packers or Giants will be out. And not only that, the crap team will actually host a playoff game. I'll give them the division, but they should have to open on the road.
