The Hu-Hu Bowl
Edited on Tue Dec-21-10 06:27 PM by SpiralHawk
aka the Sominex Holiday Bowl, will be coming past you on Dec. 30. That gives you plenty of time to get your blankets and pillows ready so you can curl up and go to sleep before the kickoff (9 PM CST).

The game (z-z-z-z-z) will pit (not Will Pitt) the Nebraska Huskers against the Washington Huskies -- thus the Hu-Hu Bowl, which may also be confused with the TidyBowl. These teams have already played each other this season, and will meet again in September.

The Holiday Bowl 'game' means doodley squat. Some fans (yo, SpiralHawk) are for the first time in a looong time having trouble GETTING IT UP for this so-called game.

Toss me a bone, someone...or wake me up when 2011 gets here...

3. Free Husker basketball tickets?
The following for Big Red is legendary, but even the warm climes of San Diego aren't enough to get Huskers fans excited about the Holiday Bowl.

Nebraska is having trouble unloading its allotment of tickets for the Dec. 30 game against Washington, and the athletic department is trying to get creative.

The school is offering two free basketball tickets to anyone who buys a Holiday Bowl ticket. It is also encouraging fans to buy tickets and donate them to military personnel in Southern California.

So far, Nebraska has sold almost 7,500 of its 11,000-ticket allotment. The school will have to eat any unsold tickets for $60 apiece.

4. The Sooners, alas, sucked all the wind out of the Husker sails
Edited on Wed Dec-22-10 01:56 PM by SpiralHawk
in the Big 12 Whatever...actually, the Huskers sucked the wind out of their own sails with fumbles, penalties, interceptions, dumb offensive strategy, and general StumbleBum crappy play. But whatever, same result...

"Wait till next year."

As ever....

5. It's a big deal for UW
it's their first bowl game in 8 years. The matchup is poor for them, Nebraska just dominated them earlier this year. The Huskies will be fired up though, while the Huskers will not only be over confident, but they might still be thinking about that 17 point lead they threw away to OU. Hopefully, it will be a good game.

6. Overconfidence is not likely to be in the Husker psyche right now
Edited on Wed Dec-22-10 07:29 PM by SpiralHawk
What Husker nation is reaching for, striving to grasp, is some kind of basic, rock-solid, well-earned confidence. They've blown it a lot this season by failure to execute.

My sense is that Nebraska will show up ready for a tough game, and well aware of the possibility that they could blow it, lose, and end their season with a big steenking fart.

I've been with the Huskers all season, and I'm not going to punk out on them now. I'm gonna wash my red T-shirt and get it ready for the game. I think the Huskers will pull it all together by the time Dec. 30 rolls around, play as well as they are capable of -- pretty damn good -- and beat Washington.

7. Husker Fever Grips the Nation
"This season's Holiday Bowl matchup is regarded as one of the afterthoughts on the overwrought, ESPN-dominated list of 35 bowls...."

8. Game Day
Edited on Thu Dec-30-10 05:12 AM by SpiralHawk
"The Holiday Bowl has all the ratings draw of 'Skating With the Stars.'"

Well, that's what the sports writers say. They may be right, but now that game day is here and I have worked (partially) through my season-end angst, I'm willing to bet a sack of Cheese Doodles that Washington and Nebraska will both play powerfully and dynamically. Both are capable of doing it. I have a hunch both will do it and the fans will get a memorable show. It may not 'mean' much, but it is a chance for a couple of good schools to have an EXCELLENT ENCOUNTER on the gridiron...Go Big Red!
