Tommy Morrison still insists he can box and doesn’t have HIV
WICHITA | Tommy Morrison is cutting into a cheap rib eye steak on a plate he has covered in ketchup. The ideas come out between bites. You have to listen carefully. The rough Oklahoma twang will spell out all kinds of ideas, things that would blow your mind if they existed outside his reality.

Telekinesis, for instance. He hasn’t quite figured it out, but he’d rather be invisible, anyway. Just think of all the stuff he could learn. One time he teleported himself out of a bar, and did you know the human body can re-grow limbs?

His face is worn and his skin sags in places, but he insists he’s in the best shape of his life. He’s going to be heavyweight champion again if boxing lets him back in, and this brings up HIV. It always comes back to HIV with Tommy, even over breakfast, so he chops up his $12 steak and eggs and tells you he is the victim of a wild conspiracy.

They stole his career, he says, at least a $38 million contract and who knows how much after that? They stole his good name, too. Made him admit to the world he has HIV. But that was before he found out that HIV doesn’t exist. It was invented to control people, he tells you, and he can go on and on about this all day.

1. Sad case.
Tommy has found some medical "expert" who verfies that he does not have the disease. However, he has not been able to pass the required testing needed to get a license to compete in any significant state.

He was a talented boxer. Not close to great, but good enough to have competed in any era. However, his career as a top-ten contender had ended before he was retired. His style of fighting does not make for a long career. More, he was undisciplined outside the ring.

It's too bad that he didn't attempt to work in another part of boxing. He could have trained fighters, or been a cornerman. But he lacked the discipline to do that.

2. I'm wondering if he might try to get into Mohegan Sun
the Mohegan Nation has established its own commission. It, not the Connecticut commission, sanctions the bouts in Uncasville.

Please, if he does, just say No.

3. I'm pretty sure
that he attempted to a couple of years ago. I don't think he'll ever fight there.

4. He's always surrounded himself with bizarre people
Nothing but bad advice - leading to bad decisions - for years.

6. True.
Your response got me thinking -- I've been involved with boxing since the early 1960s, and have known literally hundreds of boxers, from amateurs to some top professionals, and almost without exception, every pro fighter who has done well becomes not only surrounded by bizarre people .... but isolated from stable influences by those bizarre folks.

And even in the amateur ranks, there are too many decent young men who are influenced by parasites and con men.

As a general rule, the most decent people at any fight card tend to be the fighters themselves.

Tommy reached a point where he could have, in theory, had some decent people around him. But he was focused on his own image of who he wanted to be, and lost touch with who he was. In that sense, he was a real victim of the madness that saturates the sport.

5. This story, and the story about the Fridge, are amazing insights into the world of ex-athletes.
