Baseball's Playoff Ratings on TBS Slide 24 Percent From 2007
from Bloomberg:

Baseball's Playoff Ratings on TBS Slide 24 Percent From 2007

By Erik Matuszewski

Oct. 8 (Bloomberg) -- Politics, early ending series and the rare postseason absence of the New York Yankees led to 24 percent fewer television viewers during the first round of the Major League Baseball playoffs.

The 15 divisional games drew an average of 4.3 million viewers on Turner Sports' TBS network, according to Nielsen Media Research. Last year's first-round playoff games on TBS drew an average of 5.7 million viewers.

None of this year's opening-round series went to a decisive fifth game, with three decided in four games and the Los Angeles Dodgers sweeping the Chicago Cubs in three. The second game of that series was also up against the U.S. vice presidential debate, which drew 70 million viewers, according to Nielsen.

While both Los Angeles-area teams made the postseason, New York, the nation's biggest media market, didn't have a team reach the playoffs. The Mets failed to qualify on the final day of the regular season and the Yankees missed the playoffs for the first time in 14 years. Los Angeles is the second-biggest media market in the U.S. ......(more)

2. Every time the NY teams aren't in the playoffs we get this from the NY media.
As if the sport of baseball was dying because neither the Yankees or the Mets are in the post season. It's all very sad.

4. Wow, I would never guess it would have been that big of

5. TBS is a second rate network
with second rate announcers. I'm real tired of the NY factor. I mean c'mon, if the Cubs had shown up, even the crappy TBS coverage would have been ok. If New York people don't watch the playoffs just because their teams aren't good enough to make it, then they aren't really baseball fans.
But Chip Caray as the number 1 announcer? Yuck. I reapeat, TBS is second rate coverage. And right now, as I am writing this, Chip is kissing the Red Sox's ass. So fear not easterners, the sports media still loves you, even if the rest of America doesn't.
