The CBS Director is a shameless whore for showing Calhoun's granddaughter crying
Wow, that really crossed the line of civility. We were treated to a closeup of UConn coach Calhoun's little granddaughter crying after the UConn loss not just once but twice. These fuck's will do anything for a picture. Screw them. I could care less who won but that was just tasteless.

Big time win by MSU...I thought they were about to blow it though, I kept thinking how Memphis blew that big lead with a couple minutes left last year.

I didn't see her crying. More along the line of her not being happy.

They've been doing that for years with wives, kids, grandkids. It's part of the game. Stay home if you don't want to be on TV. Watch it from your room where no one can get you.

24. They have done it for years, but it's not part of the game
Edited on Sun Apr-05-09 11:44 AM by caraher
it's part of the sappy spectacle CBS gloms on top of the game. I've despised their coverage for years... especially how they treat the games as coaching matchups. Sure, Tom Izzo and Jim Calhoun have a lot to do with the outcome of the game, but I really don't need to see shots of Izzo's wife or Calhoun's granddaughter - I can infer from the outcome of the game what their emotions might be, if I really cared.

I think the coach fetish betrays an inability of the folks who run the broadcasts to identify with the athletes themselves. We get this obsession with the coaches as managers, motivators and strategy wonks rather than a focus on the young people playing their hearts out. Love of the game seems eclipsed by love of lovers of the game.

Showing reactions of relatives is sports coverage's version of sending the reporter to ask the family that just lost their home in a fire how they feel.

(Tangentially related... one of my favorite postgame interview moments ever was after Houston beat Louisville in the '80s when Olajuwon was a new sensation who had not yet learned the lingo of sports cliches. Some idiot asked him, "How do you feel?" after their semifinal victory, and he said something like, "We played hard. We won. We are happy." I think he was a bit taken aback by the question but managed to give this answer without any obvious signs of condescension.)

19. The thrill of victory. The agony of defeat.
Nothing wrong with showing both.

If you can't stomach it, don't watch it.

22. Tacky, but not that offensive.
I'm quite sure the kid won't be emotionally scarred for life because a camera showed her tearing up. I didn't see it, but I'm guessing they didn't do it to mock her or make fun of the Calhoun family or anything.

The beauty of sports to many of us is, unlike a soap opera or a movie, it's unscripted drama. This illustrates that drama to perfection in many ways, and shows the emotion involved, even for a child of the coach. It's emotional for people to see as well (as evidenced by your reaction), and that's why they do it.

Honestly, I'd be with you if I thought this was harmful to the child somehow, but by tomorrow she'll be playing again. Kids are like that.

I haven't changed my mind but I was way out of line calling Condem a POS. Not very nice on my part. :( I still think giving the kid the finger even through the TV though was a bit ... bizarre shall we say.

I couldn't hear the sound, so all I saw was a Huskie. You have to understand us Big Tenners. We've been catching a ton of shit lately. Fed up with it. The "aw, shucks" moments don't register, right now. Redemption would. Not that it will happen, tonight. Class move, Hokie. Join us for a Big Ten Tailgate. You'd love it. Peace. The funny thing is..I'm the quietest one of the bunch. Go Spartans!

It kind of brings out the primal emotions. Been there, done that. I am still pissed at myself for losing my cool. It doesn't happen often but it can be right ugly when it does. (Or so I have been told.)
