Ex-cop sells pot tips on DVD
BIG SANDY, Texas -- Barry Cooper sells a DVD on how to stash pot in your car without getting caught. This fall he will release a second one on how to keep police from raiding your home for marijuana.

Now for the kicker: Cooper is a former narcotics officer once considered among the top cops in Texas, where more marijuana is seized each year than in any other state.

The formerly straight-laced lawman has become a shaggy-haired militant for the legalization of weed.

Six months ago he released "Never Get Busted Again," in which the former star of West Texas' Permian Basin Drug Task Force gives tips on hiding marijuana (dashboards are rife with nooks and crannies) and throwing off drug-sniffing dogs (coat your tires in fox urine).

5. Gotta disagree w Coopers advice to consent to searches.
I've sucessfully turned down 24 consecutive requests for consent over 17 years. Print this out as a card, sign ahead of time.

NOTICE TO LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS

I do not consent to a search of my person, belongings, home, or
vehicle. I retain my 4th Amendment Rights, and all other Rights
under the US and State Constitutions.

The 4th Amendment

The right of the people to be secure in their person, houses,
papers, and effects against unreasonable searches and siezures
shall not be violated, and no warrant shall issue, but upon
probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly
describing the place to be searched, and the person or things to
be siezed.

15. NEVER agree to a search
If the cop says he is going to get a K9 just ask him if you are free to leave. If he says no, then he has to have a reasonable suspicion that there is criminal activity BEYOND what he pulled you over for.

IF he says yes, then of course leave.

By not consenting to the search, you can later object to it in court. If you are successful in supressing the search, anything found gets thrown out. By not agreeing to a search the cops either have to have a WARRANT or probable cause that you are commiting a crime. A hunch isnt good enough.

You make your case much stronger in court if you dont agree to a search.

Also do not believe ANYTHING a cop tells you when you are in that kind of situation. Their main tactic is deception, and they will lie, pretend to like you, WHATEVER they have to do to get you to make some statement that can be construed as a confession.

DONT make any statements. Your refusal to make statements can't be used against you. Neither can refusing the search.

7. Yeah this doesn't work
I'm a homicide investigator now but when I was on patrol, if I smelled drugs and the person wouldn't consent to a search, I would indeed call in the K-9 unit. Obviously other drugs with less of an odor are easier to hide.

I'm not consenting to a search and giving up my rights, your gonna have to work for it........

Any kind of animal urine will throw a K-9 off.

People dumb enough to smoke dope while driving and carry more than they can eat, deserve to be busted....

9. no i have no problem with people being aware of their rights
Edited on Tue Jul-31-07 06:16 PM by MiserableFailure
there's an ACLU video circulating around on youtube that gives good advice for knowing your rights, because there are dishonest cops out there. honestly though, if i smell marijuana, that is more than enough for me to search the car myself, even without a k9. it'll be found. and if you give it up at the beginning then maybe the car won't have to be ripped apart.

in reality though, the vast majority of people that i dealt with just gave into a search because they didn't know their rights, and i certainly was not required to inform them. i'd often ask to search cars by putting on my authoritative voice even if i didn't smell anything, and if the guy said no then i couldn't really do anything, and i just gave the guy his traffic ticket or whatever and left. but tons of people just got scared about saying no to a cop, and let me search their car, and i found all kinds of stuff, like illegal guns and many different types of drugs.

10. Yes many are unaware of their rights.....
Once(a looooong time ago, lol) I had two joints with me riding down the freeway and had just put one out after smoking half and then I see this bluelight behind me. I always make sure I carry no more than I can eat right quick and always have something to help wash it down. So I ate the one and half right quick as I pulled to the emergency lane. When two officers walked up to both sides of my vehicle they smelled it and asked me to get out so I did. They said they smelled the odor of marijuana and I lied and said they had to be mistaken. They searched the whole truck with my consent and found nothing. They got angry and threatened to call the k9 unit. I said go ahead. The looked under it and everywhere but found nothing. After an hour or more they finally let me go. I never transport more than I can eat!
But marijuana should be completely legal! It is one of the most beneficial plants there is as I've found out and most people are too ignorant of it's uses!

11. .
We should legalize marijuana immediately then phase in legalizing other drugs over a 10-20 year period, then slowly bring in legalization of hard drugs.
