400 Gather at Iowa Capitol to Protest Same-Sex Marriage

It's being reported by the Desmoines Register that at least 400 same-sex opponents have gathered in protest at the Iowa Capitol.

When a Republican call for a state constitutional amendment, which would effectively ban same-sex marriage, was ruled out of order, shouts came from the gallery, "Let us vote!"

"Security was stepped up considerably at the Statehouse this morning," reports the Desmoines Register. "Troopers are standing guard outside the chamber doors, in the balconies and around the Iowa Capitol."

Iowa Family Policy Center, a conservative group that opposes same-sex marriage and who are pushing beyond state rules for an amendment, said they would work to vote elected officials who support gay marriage out of office.

1. "This is about morality and the word of God." Idiots. If there is a God, I wonder if she/he is
embarrassed to be associated with such petty morons.

2. Ah, the smell of hatred in the morning...
They interviewed on Hispanic religious person (it was in the USA Today and I do not have a copy of it) and he said it was like a punch to them. He said it proves the need for a federal amendment to the Constitution.

Evil.
Sick.
Twisted.

And a bunch of other words my momma told me never to use.

4. I was there
The north side gallery was mostly filled with supporters of marriage equality with their white tshirts with big blue dots. The south side of the gallery was filled with those against equality, dress appropriately in red. Hmmmm, one side on the north and the opposition on the south. Interesting ... of course I sat with my equality shirt in the middle of the reds. Two old men against equality asked if the seats at the end of the aisle were taken, I said "No, go ahead and have a seat, we don't discriminate." A grandma lady sitting next to me tried her best to tell me that I am not as good of a christian as her. I told her I am fine with her belief, if it makes her feel good, but that God will judge me and not her. She then proceeded to discuss anal sex with me. What a sad world these unfortunate souls have that they find the need to feel superior by being bullies and bigots.

6. To the holier-than-thou granny discussing anal sex, I would have said
"Ma'am, I have to say: you seem far more obsessed with anal sex than any I gay man I have ever known, Biblically and otherwise."

9. To Those Christians Who Would Pounce...
I would think you should use some of that energy to show us that the majority of Christians aren't like these people in Iowa. The problem here is that many of the Christians who aren't like this lot in Iowa stay silent and do nothing, either through fear or a perception that marriage equality is not their problem. That's not all Christians who aren't homophobic bigots, but far too many of those who might be supportive of us stay silent.

I too find it very interesting that Granny knows so much about anal sex. Is it just me, or have others noticed that many of these religious right types have an interest in gay sex that I would call unhealthy in people who are supposedly straight (thik "porno Pete LaBarbara, who gives people who check out his site lurid descriptions of gay venues and what goes on there...such as the Mid-Atlantic Leather weekend which was cancelled after religious right pressure on the hotel? What is up with that? I'm not straight and don't have an interst in straight sex, feelin that it is the business of straight couples and no one else.
