NY poll: Gay marriage supported. (Catholics support. Protestants oppose.)
Edited on Mon Apr-20-09 10:50 AM by pnwmom

Looks like NY is close to being the first state to Legislate gay rights, with the support of a clear majority of citizens.

These poll results must be a shock and a disappointment to New York's bishops!

As I've said before, the hierarchy doesn't speak for most Catholics anymore, on a variety of issues.

By a margin of 53 percent to 39 percent, respondents to the Siena College Research Institute poll believe the Senate should pass a measure introduced by Gov. David A. Paterson to let gays marry. Eight percent were unsure or had no opinion.

SNIP

The Siena poll found support for gay marriage rights among Democrats, women, Catholics, Jews, and residents of New York City, the downstate suburbs and, by a 50 to 40 percent margin, those living upstate. It was backed most heavily by independents and those age 18 to 34, a subgroup that favored the right by a 71 to 20 percent margin.

Those most likely to oppose the gay marriage bill were males, blacks, Protestants and those over age 55. Republicans, by a 59 to 31 percent margin, were most opposed among the various subgroups, the poll found.

3. Bravo, New York!
I'm guessing "Protestants" were heavily represented by Evangelicals in the poll.

The stat on young people is really encouraging. Nice to see discrimination "aging out."

4. Judging from the young people I know, we have at most ten years before this
is a non-issue. The other side is doomed!

7. Catholics supporting a gay marriage bill?
Might be because they may be more tolerant?

11. Seriously, at LostinVA and I's wedding probably about 90% were Roman Catholic
Of Irish and/or Sicilian descent.

Even my crazy ass Freeper racist step-grandfather likes to say, "I like the gays!" Apparently, gays are the *only* minority he isn't a bigot about.

12. I think the rank and file
Catholics have been able to overlook some of the advice about sex and relationships pretty well, going back to contraception.

They take the bst of the message, faith, hope and charity, the beatitudes, do unto others...etc. and sort of ignore the old men in frocks when it comes to sex stuff.

I wish they would let the Jesuits run things. :P

9. That's been my personal experience.
The Catholics I know haven't batted an eye at the fact that I'm a lesbian and left my longtime marriage. Some - not all - of the Protestants I know are a bit freaked. A couple of them have been downright bigoted.
