We're Winning: 42% (+9%) now say same sex couples should be allowed to legally marry (national poll)

Forty-two percent of Americans now say same sex couples should be allowed to legally marry, a new CBS News/New York Times poll finds. That's up nine points from last month, when 33 percent supported legalizing same sex marriage.

Support for same sex marriage is now at its highest point since CBS News starting asking about it in 2004.

Twenty-eight percent say same sex couples should have no legal recognition – down from 35 percent in March – while 25 percent support civil unions, but not marriage, for gay couples.

As has historically been the case on this issue, liberals are more likely to support same sex marriage. Sixty-nine percent support the idea, while conservatives generally favor either civil unions (28 percent) or no legal recognition (44 percent).

1. I don't expect a lot of change from the intransigent 28%
but I do expect more to shift from civil union to full marriage as time goes on and the sky does not fall in states that have legalized full marriage rights for all consenting adults.

Time is your greatest ally. You simply can't stop an idea whose time has come.

2. The intransigent 28% is dying off day by day. Literally.
I don't see this trend turning around any time soon.

5. New dimwits are being born every day
Remember that study that tracked toddlers through adulthood and found a correlation between being whiny, clingy tattletales early in life and being conservatives in adulthood?

That's where that 28% is from. They are our damaged brothers and sisters and they are not going to change. Ever.

3. That 28% seems to be there as a historical fixture.
I was reading something a while back about history, can't even recall if it was about Lincoln or FDR, but anyway what struck me that there was that fixed number in opposition at around 28% then too, regardless of what the issue was.

10. Especially considering that the "civil union" category

...is likely to be populated by respondents who wouldn't oppose marriage, but believe CU to be more broadly acceptable.

When they find out that more support marriage than CU, a good chunk of that block is probably just as happy.

8. Was that an earthquake? No, just Jerry Falwell's rotting carcass
rolling over in his grave. Sure wish you were here to witness the repudiation of your ideas (don't miss you enough that I'd want you back any other time) but at least Dobson and the rest of the professional hate-for-pay industrialists will see it happen in their lifetime.

And there will be no doom and gloom as they've predicted
