Jersey Shore Gay Tirade
I never thought of the characters on Jersey Shore as particularly gay-friendly individuals. Given the number of bar fights they get into, I wouldn’t want to run into any of them, even if I had straight tattooed on my forehead. So it’s not a surprise when Ronnie (if you are wondering who Ronnie is, he’s the loser with the girlfriend) goes on a tirade against another guy at a fair using the word faggot and f*cking queer. What is interesting is that MTV chose to cut this footage (just released on YouTube) completely from the aired version of the show.

Now, some on the internet are upset about the decision to censor this kind of outburst. Ronnie, it seems, is being portrayed as a more upstanding guy than he really is. Just how upstanding is he? MTV quickly released statements that Ronnie is always respectful towards the gay staff that work on the show. We are breathing easier MTV. Thanks.

13. Actually, gay rights advocates are the ones asking it not to be exposed.

16. Indulging In the Fantasy That Jersey Shore Has ANY "aspirational elements" Is Annoying
While I agree that the audience for this shit is too stupid to realize that this jackassery is NOT admirable behavior, it annoys me that gay people are willing to contribute to the pretense that this stupid asshole is a worthwhile human being.

2. They were pressured by women's groups to cut out the assault scene on Snooki.
Might gay groups have applied the same pressure to cut out this scene?

4. Ronnie was portrayed as a dull, meat headed jerk, dumb even by Jersey Shore standards.

While they didn't show the segment you mentioned, they showed him as the overjuiced, one dimensional person he is. Such bigotry is consistent with the character presented. He got in two serious fights, being arrested for one after knocking a kid out in what appeared to be a running sucker punch.

6. Not only do they watch this shit, they visit the house!
I live not far from Seaside Heights, and frequently go there to walk along the deserted (it's off season) boardwalk. I was driving along the road where the house is located and idiots from out-of-state were parked in the middle of the street, blocking traffic, so they could take pictures and video of the house with them in front of it.

12. LOL! Wow.
I guess I can't be surprised.

Remember when the "Dallas" house was the thing to see? We stopped there once . . .

7. Isn't it depressing?
If I wouldn't want to be around them, why would I want to watch them on TV?

8. I guess it's the train wreck syndrome.
No one wants to be in one, but you can't help watching from a distance. I guess.

9. I guess I don't have train wreck syndrome.
But I know I'm in the minority.

Yesterday the traffic was at a crawl on the freeway on the way home, and it turned out to have been caused by rubbernecking one fascinating cop car on the side of the road, doing absolutely nothing. We're short of entertainment around here, I'm telling ya....!

10. I accidentally watched about 30 seconds of that drivel...
and I believe my IQ dropped about 50%.

Thankfully a nice hot bath and a good book produced a full recovery.

11. playing devil's advocate
not excusing it, but yelling faggot and fucking queer at a gay boy probably isn't all that provocative as yelling it at a straight man in a straight bar.

I think someone with half a brain can be of two (little teeny) minds - respectful towards gays out of social mores, yet view calling someone who isn't gay, gay, as the ultimate insult.

It's a little retarded you know. :P

I do think there was a missed opportunity here on the part of MTV though. They could have aired it, and pointed out that crap like that is habituated among people, kind of like saying "that's so gay" isn't really malicious, just thoughtless.

Unless I say it.

15. I Agree That You Don't Have To Be Homophobic To Use Homophobic Slurs
Edited on Thu Feb-18-10 05:11 PM by Toasterlad
However, you DO have to be ignorant, which this clown apparently is, in spades. Either way, it doesn't say much for his character, and he's not someone worthy of respect.

On edit: of course, as with ANYTHING word-related, it depends on context. In this context, the dude is an asshole whether he meant to be homophobic or not.

17. agreed on that
although I have to admit I am like, a total virgin for that show and I'm going to keep it that way. Abstinence really DOES prevent the vee dee, and I think you can get that just by watching that show. shudder. plus an unnatural urge to apply way too much hair product and start walking like an ape.

:P
