Mass. Catholic school won't admit lesbians' son
Mass. Catholic school won't admit lesbians' son

BOSTON—A Roman Catholic school in Massachusetts has withdrawn its acceptance of an 8-year-old boy with lesbian parents.

A parent of the boy said the Rev. James Rafferty, the parish priest at Saint Paul Elementary School in Hingham, told her Monday that her relationship was "in discord" with church teachings.

A spokesman for the Boston Archdiocese says the archdiocese learned about the school's decision late Tuesday. He said the archdiocese is talking with Rafferty and the school's principal to learn more.

The woman, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of concerns about the effect on her son, said she didn't expect the church to approve of her relationship. But she said the school was discriminating against her son, and she doesn't feel that is right.

3. Private school
I have no problem with it. I think they're assholes for doing it, but within their rights.

Maybe people will actually leave the church soon.

13. I DO have a problem with it.
Let them pay taxes! Because the city, state and federal services they suck up cost the rest of us money that they benefit from -- and yet they don't pay squat.

Who formed an army, a navy, an air force and marines to protect them -- to insure that no other country with their "false religion" forces them out of business? Who built the storm sewers outside their door so that the church and the school doesn't float away in a storm? Who pays for the cops to make sure no one steals the collections on Sunday (unless it's an inside job by the priests, of course)? Who pays the firemen to put out the fires? Who pays for the street lighting, the sidewalks and the streets to be built and maintained -- the very ones that lead the pigeons right to their doors? Who pays for someone to collect their garbage? Who pays for the public health services to keep their parishioners healthy enough to go out to their jobs everyday and work and slave so that later they can tithe 10% of their earnings to Jesus?

So these women can be taxed by Uncle Sam and through the state and the city where they live -- and the church and the school can take money from these good-lesbian-mom-taxpayers -- but they don't have to be forced to teach their kids?

A country club is a nonprofit and it's private and would probably never allow me in, so they pay taxes. A housing coop is selective of who it's members are and won't let you in if you make too much noise, so they pay taxes. Because while both are nonprofits, they're mutual benefit nonprofits - so they can legally be exclusive about who can become a member -- and so they have to pay taxes. But the reason that a church or a school is tax-exempt (501 (c) 3 or 4) is because their services are supposed to for a charitable or educational purpose -- and available to anyone from the public.

There is NO EXEMPTION for them to exclude homosexuals in the IRS regulations. I looked it up.

- So it's time that they paid for their own freight........

16. Do they have to take everyone?
Can they not kick anyone out? What if the kid wants to go but parents can't afford it? I think it is a shitty stance from a church that should not have that stance according to their gospels, but they do. It is the nature of the private school that they get to pick their students.

21. If you take the king's shilling, you fight the king's war....
...but if you don't take his shilling, you don't have to fight.

A clear case of 'Separation of church and state for me, but not for thee.'

5. Geez, all thought they were all about love your choir boys
Imagine them using such an old testament attitude, when they warrant pedophilic priests under the law of the new testament...to love others as you have loved your seminary mates.

17. The state does fund some programs in catholic schools....
but the schools are actively trying to get much more money from the government. Catholics are constantly lobbying for "Parental Choice" credits and full funding of required programs. Apparently, they are doing us all a big favor by taking students out of public schools and sending them to learn sex education from Father Murphy.

This incident is a great reason to deny them any support from hard working tax payers.

I await the list of federal and state programs St. Paul's is presently getting money from.

Knowing Hingham, it sure isn't Title I money, or free-and-reduced lunch money.

8. I don't quite understand why they would want to send their son to a school
where he would be taught his mothers' relationship is "sinful".

If they don't want to send him to public school, there must be another private school in the area without attitudes like this.

9. Crap - they discriminate against the boy because of his parents?
Do they not allow kids in if their parents are unmarried - or divorced and remarried - or single moms, dads, etc?????

Or is it just kids of gay and lesbian couples who are given thumbs down?

10. Then their logic should be used for them
All catholics need to be registered as sex offenders because there are pedophile priests, nuns, cardinals, bishops, and the congregation is free to leave but don't. They call themselves christians but use the old testament to justify their evil actions. If they were truly christians they would read the new testament and find that christ did not discriminate against others like they do.

12. Apparently that priest forgot about Matthew 19:14.
New International Version (©1984)
Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."

New American Standard Bible (©1995)
But Jesus said, "Let the children alone, and do not hinder them from coming to Me; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."

International Standard Version (©2008)
Jesus, however, said, "Let the little children come to me, and stop keeping them away, because the kingdom of heaven belongs to people like these."

GOD'S WORD® Translation (©1995)
Jesus said, "Don't stop children from coming to me! Children like these are part of the kingdom of God."

King James Bible
But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.

I looked and can't find that it says anywhere "unless their parents are gays or lesbians."

18. saw this. more ridiculousness from the catholic leaders (notice I didn't say faithful)
but they need to stand up against these asshats.

This current pope, imho, is a nazi weirdo that allowed predators to roam free in the church. Shame on him.

It's their right to block people if they want, but it shows what kind of monsters they are by doing so, and no one should go to their churches, and find open-minded places to worship.
