GOP Lawmakers Draft Bill To Impeach Remaining Supreme Court Justices
IOWA: GOP Lawmakers Draft Bill To Impeach Remaining Supreme Court Justices

Unsatisfied with the November retention vote that ousted three pro-equality Iowa Supreme Court justices, GOP lawmakers there are drafting a bill to impeach the remaining four for "malfeasance" because they enabled the legalization of same-sex marriage.

State Reps. Tom Shaw (R-Laurens), Glen Massie (R-Des Moines) and Kim Pearson (R-Pleasant Hill) are working on the legislation that could result in the removal of the four justices — Mark Cady, David Wiggins, Daryl Hecht and Brent Appel. During last month’s judicial retention vote, three justices were removed from the bench after a contentious campaign that saw five out-of-state anti-gay organizations spend nearly $1 million to oust the judges. The impeachment effort got a boost Wednesday when Speaker-elect Kraig Paulsen (R-Hiawatha) said if he thought Iowans wanted the four justices removed, he would not stand in the way. A few days earlier, state Sen. Kent Sorenson (R-Indianola), who will sit on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said he will also push for impeachment proceedings.

1. What are the right wingers going to do when gay people
turn the tide and decide that the only way they can live free is to get rid of the right wingers any way necessary?

9. I'm not GLBT, but I'm right there with you, HillWilliam.
I only keep one firearm in the house, but I have nearly two dozen that I've inherited and/or purchased over the years.

I find it interesting that there is this pervasive myth that only Rightists have a lot of weapons. I see it here on a regular basis, and I see it from the Rightists just about as frequently.

One of my Uncles is a blue-as-blue-can-be union Steelworker, and he has a collection that would make any firearm enthusiast drool with envy.

I never turn down trips to the range with him. :)

5. Didn't I read somewhere earlier this week that the vote was illegal?
The vote that was held in November is being called into question because it listed all three judges on a single ballot question, and the law requires that it be done individually.

10. I assume they need a super majority to actually succeed at this?
I assume the wingnuts actually need to win a super majority to kick out the judges for doing their jobs?

This whole campaign in Iowa has been just disgusting, this is exactly why I've lost my respect for much for the judicial system, too many judges are just politicians in a robe who have to worry about getting reelected. Studies show that does have a noticeable effect on how harsh a sentence criminals get near election time. And then so many judges have gotten into scandals with lobbyist groups, just like regular politicians.

Iowa made a mistake a few decades ago when they reformed their judicial system, their mistake was the retention vote. Practically no other country in the world lets people vote on judges, not even to retain them or not.
