Maine Gays Not Rushing To Push For Marriage

Fresh off a victory that saw Maine voters approve retaining the state's LGBT civil rights law gay activists say they are in no rush to press for marriage rights.

" a long-term goal," said Betsy Smith of Equality Maine, and could take between five and 10 years to achieve.

The conservative religious group that sought to have the law granting equal rights protections for the LGBT community overturned Nov. 8 had argued throughout the campaign that if the law were upheld by voters the next step would be legalized marriage.
