Utah Moves To Block Gay Parent Visitation Rights

A bill to prevent a court from awarding parental rights against the wishes of the biological or adoptive parent passed the Utah House on Tuesday.

The legislation stemmed from a case involving two lesbians who broke up and where a judge give one of the women visitation rights despite the objections of the other who was the birth parent.

The bill was sponsored by Rep. LaVar Christensen (R-Draper) who also sponsored Utah's constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage and is involved in suit challenging Salt Lake City's domestic partner benefits.

Some lawmakers worry the visitation bill could effect grandparents and/or stepparents.

Since when is child visitation only about parents? when? Since bigots, self-righteous *sses push through legislation w/o any psychiatric or psychological input about what's best for the children, that's when. As well as w/o any appreciation of existing case law too. Geezuz. Anyone who's spent more than one hour in a family law courtroom will tell you that custody and visitation and child support are about children not solely about parents! At what time do bigoted legislators grow-up and become the adults that we'd wish upon our nation's children; that is, to legislate favorably in the best interests of our children?
