I spent a recent rainy afternoon at the movies. With my Twizzlers in hand, I sat down to enjoy my favorite part of the movies — the previews.
After the first few, I noticed that each was getting more and more violent — seemingly more intense than the PG-13 movie I was about to see. There were beheadings, swords slashing stomachs and a woman plummeting to her death.
Generally I am opposed to censorship. After all, the "action" film I was about to see was most likely going to have some violence in it. So why should the previews be any different? The aggressive previews did, however, lead me to reflect on how differently our society treats censorship and morality when it comes to violence and sexuality.
Author Ernest Gaines asks, "Why is it that, as a culture, we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than holding hands?"
