Melissa Etheridge - "Silent Legacy"
I downloaded a bunch of music from iTunes this weekend, including the "Yes I Am" album by Melissa Etheridge. "Silent Legacy" just now came up and... wow. Just wow. Very powerful, especially if you grew up gay a few decades ago or in a conservative family. If you've never heard this before, I highly recommend it.

....

You've seen it in the movies
And you've heard it on the street
Craving the affection
Your blood is full of heat
They don't listen to your reasons
As original as sin
Deny all that you feel
And they will bring you home again

And as you pray in your darkness
For wings to set you free
You are bound to your silent legacy

....

Mothers tell your children
Be quick you must be strong
Life is full of wonder
Love is never wrong
Remember how they taught you
How much of it was fear
Refuse to hand it down
The legacy stops here

Oh my child...

1. Thanks for the recommendation. I'm not a big Etheridge fan, but
these lyrics look like something I'd like to listen to.

2. I like Melissa Etheridge- in small doses.

I got "Yes I am" Just because... well... I thought that she was brave. (or because i was a non-self aware queer kid?) Actually, IIRC, my parents got it in one of those BMG 12 for 1 deals- they let me pick a couple. I didn't like the album for years- gave it to my mom- she loved it. After I came out, I snagged the CD when I was back in NYC and listened to it. I liked it then... and I asked if I could have it... I could have bought a copy- I don't know why I asked for it... other than to make my mom acknowledge that her kid liked more than...the music- and identified with the artist... It was one of those challenge moments... I still own it, and play it sometimes.

However, those lyrics make me want to break out that old CD!

3. When I get a bit of time I'll check it out on iTunes
I can usually get a whole album for $10 so I don't mind picking up something I may only listen to from time to time. I know I like her voice so it's not like I'm buying something completely unknown.
