Anti-gay politician Ruth Kelly in UK close to quitting over gay adoption issue
ANTI-GAY RIGHTS KELLY CLOSE TO QUITTING
Cabinet battle over adoptions row
By Bob Roberts Deputy Political Editor

RUTH Kelly is on the brink of resigning over the gay adoption row, Labour MPs warned yesterday.

Communities Secretary Ms Kelly, a devout Catholic, has been battling to exempt the church's adoption agencies from new equality laws forcing them to place children with gay couples.

Virtually all the Cabinet apart from Tony Blair are against her, saying there must be no optout.

But friends said she is being forced to choose between her religion and her politics.

Labour MP Stephen Pound, a fellow Catholic, said she was in a "desperately difficult situation". He added: "She can either abandon her ambition or her faith."

1. If she truly believes that's what her religion teaches, then she should
resign since she can't support the law that her job requires. I don't have to agree with her to respect her decision to leave her job if she has that conflict. On the flip side, if she doesn't quit her job after all this, then it's just one more example of religious hypocrisy - as though we were short on other examples.

(in the Guardian, by Westminster commentator Simon Hoggart, if I remember right) as a devout member of Opus Dei.
