H1N1 Gives Clues to Universal Flu Vaccine
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/updates/health/jan-june11/flu_01-18.html

The H1N1 pandemic flu caused a global panic when it first emerged in 2009, but researchers now say it could hold the key to vaccines that protect against a variety of influenza strains.

In a study published last week, scientists from the University of Chicago and Emory University found that patients infected with the 2009 H1N1 strain developed antibodies that are reactive to multiple strains of flu—an immune response that was previously considered quite rare.

...

The antibodies from the patients were reactive for all the seasonal H1N1 flu strains from the last decade, the "Spanish flu" strain from 1918, and a strain of the H5N1 avian flu.

Seasonal flu vaccines are reformulated each year to protect against the three influenza viruses public health officials predict will be most common. A universal flu vaccine, that could eliminate the need for individual flu strain vaccines, has long been sought in the fight against the illness, which kills thousands of people in the United States each year.

1. I heard the vaccine causes you to get H1N1 and ring around the collar.

2. Well, I did get ring around the collar.
It was a bad case, too. My shirt spent a week at the dry cleaners, and it hasn't been the same since.

3. So maybe they should have let us get swine flu?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-12152500

Swine flu offers 'extraordinary super immunity'

H1N1 virus Swine flu infection boosted immunity to surprising degrees

People who recover from swine flu may be left with an extraordinary natural ability to fight off flu viruses, findings suggests. In beating a bout of H1N1 the body makes antibodies that can kill many other flu strains, a study in the Journal of Experimental Medicine shows. ...

In the nine patients they studied who had caught swine flu during the pandemic, they found the infection had triggered the production of a wide range of antibodies that are only very rarely seen after seasonal flu infections or flu vaccination. Five antibodies isolated by the team could fight all the seasonal H1N1 flu strains from the last decade, the devastating "Spanish flu" strain from 1918 which killed up to 50m people, plus a potentially deadly bird flu H5N1 strain.

The researchers believe the "extraordinarily" powerful antibodies were created as the body learned how to fight the new infection with swine flu using its old memory of how to fight off other flu viruses.

8. Totally.
We as a species should just let diseases rampage through the population naturally and cull the herd.

I was not aware that you were a eugenicist.

You REALLY want to go there?

17. No, I wanted to make a joke.
I have no problems with any vaccines other than influenza and Gardasil once thimerosal is removed from them and the toxic effects of their adjuvants (for the vaccines that contain these adjuvants) are fully studied.

20. Lousy joke.
But you have no evidence that thimerosal or adjuvants have caused any harm. Meanwhile, we have 70+ years of actual vaccine dispensation factually against you.

Good luck with those windmills.

However, it's good to know that the month I spent sick was not for naught.

I'm wondering why you don't respond in this manner to some others who post far more about vaccines, and, who, if they weren't pushing lies and half-truths about vaccines, would allow all of us to actually discuss other matters on the health forum.

I have no desire to discuss vaccines, but I will respond when others are pushing anti-vaccine propaganda.

So why focus on me, and not those who actually spend far more time on the matter?

16. Let me tell you why.
Edited on Thu Feb-03-11 02:19 PM by K8-EEE
Because my very small ignore list comes up on every one of these threads, and the reason they are on my ignore list is because anything but 100% compliance to every vax immediately brings on attacks of being "anti-science," "folowers of Jenny whatsher name or Andrew Wakefield," a person who wants others to get polio, cancer, and whatever, etc.

The hostility has gotten to where you don't even wait to mock out anybody with a different view -- but include it in the initial post and then the tag team immediately chimes in.

It's gotten to the point where anybody who has any question in regard to the pharmaceutical companies and their influence over testing, recommendations etc. of vaccinations or any drugs are shouted down and called names. I don't begrudge you or any of the others the right to advocate your position but the overt hostility has made this issue impossible to discuss.

Is it possible you and the others who always chime in on this can be less hostile, or at least wait for someone to disagree before mocking out those who might have a different opinion than a pharmacetical lobbyist?

Edited on Thu Feb-03-11 02:26 PM by HuckleB
Funny thing about your strawman is that you conveniently ignore the very real hostility and deceit of those who push anti-vaccine propaganda. It appears that you have a double standard on these matters.

Oddly, you can see just that in the first response to my first question.

Why is that?

24. You continue to claim that I am hostile, but you offer very little evidence to that end.
Edited on Thu Feb-03-11 02:57 PM by HuckleB
Meanwhile, you appear to be ignoring the very real hostility and clear deceit of others.

Why is that?

Can you please give an actual, thoughtful answer? If you can't, then what is your point in posting here?

BTW, is hostility something that only others should avoid?

BTW, the moderators have been quite busy. I am willing to bet that they've had to delete far more ugly posts from those who push the meme that vaccines are horrible than the other way around.

Anyway, it's clear that your attack was intended to be hostile. Considering that you just gave a +1 to a post by one of the most hostile posters on these boards, your agenda is far too clear.
