Battery-Powered Cigarettes Deliver a Low-Cost Nicotine Fix

"If you just suck on it, it should work," scientist David B. Abrams said, handing me an Njoy brand e-cigarette. (That's "e" for electronic; nothing to do with the Internet, except that the devices are sold there in abundance.) Inside the tube is a lithium battery that warms and aerosolizes a nicotine solution; Njoy says it works like a vaporizer.
After a few puffs, I found myself wreathed in a fine mist of nostalgia. An e-cig supplies none of the flavor or warmth of a real smoke ("Joy of the palate, delight of the nose!" as one forgotten poet put it), yet I was transported back to the days when smoking didn't equal social opprobrium, when hacks like me hammered on typewriters with nicotine-stained fingers, inhaling madly as deadline loomed.
In a word, I got a buzz.

The products are unregulated, untested in this country and not approved by the Food and Drug Administration, which has sanctioned other nicotine-supplying substitutes such as patches and gum.

Although the devices are available online and in scattered retail outlets, the agency says it has halted some imports and is evaluating whether sales require FDA approval.

E-cigs supply nicotine via the lungs -- albeit without the tar, carbon monoxide and other nasties in tobacco smoke -- and thus provide the almost instantaneous "hit" that smokers crave.

2. "Evaluating"?
Why is this even a question? Of course a nicotine delivery system should be regulated. Too high a dose could have all kinds of negative effects.

7. I bought a pen style type
I like it. It takes care of the hand to mouth thing and feels much like smoking a regular cigarette. It is heavier and that is what I am getting myself used to. I found a forum that has critiques of the different brands and of sellers of same.

I am ordering a back up one from http://www.thesmokelessshop.com/ultimate_blackwhite_dse901_starter_kit
This person answers email quickly and is a wealth of info for first timers. The ultimate starter kit is a very good price.

8. Thanks for the info
I was hoping to find them locally so I could ask questions and feel one before purchasing but none of the shops around here carry them. I think I'm going to just ask for some advice from the vendor you linked to. Thanks so much!
Between the tax increases and the awful new "fire safe" papers I'm looking for an alternative.

10. That vaporcig.com video is hilariously awesome.
The girl in the video is literally having almost an orgasmic fit of nicotine ingestion. I love it.

Does this vapor cigarette smell at all?

12. Agree, check out that forum
that mojo mentioned... everything you ever wanted to know about electronic cigarettes. I use two styles, the pen (801) and the mini (901). Love them both, the pen a little bit more.

9. Triple therapy--patch + nicotine inhaler + antidepressants -- boosts quit rates in smokers

In smokers with chronic illnesses, a combination of a nicotine patch, a nicotine inhaler and an antidepressant increases quit rates compared with standard therapy with a nicotine patch only, a study published today shows.

The study involved 127 smokers, who expressly wanted to quit, with illnesses such as heart disease, lung disease, cancer, and diabetes. The smokers were randomly assigned to receive a nicotine patch for 10 weeks or a combination of a nicotine patch, a nicotine inhaler, and the antidepressant bupropion for as long as needed.

At about six months, the patients in the combination therapy group had a success rate of approximately 35 percent. By contrast, the nicotine patch group achieved only a 19 percent success rate.

13. This approach WORKED for me
However, I REALLY wanted to quit.

Not for economic or even societal pressures, But because I knew that
if I didn't quit smoking my life would end prematurely

And that my Friends isn't fair to my loved ones or myself
I smoked for 41 years

It's now, 13 months and counting :)
