Stephen Hawking 'sings' on pop single tribute to scientist Carl Sagan
A new pop single featuring lyrics spoken by wheelchair-bound theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking has gone on sale, as a tribute to his fellow astronomer Carl Sagan.

Published: 8:00AM GMT 09 Nov 2009

A Glorious Dawn mixes dialogue from Sagan's 1980s TV show Cosmos: A Personal Voyage with Prof Hawking's voice.

Produced by White Stripes frontman Jack White's Third Man Records label, composer John Boswell set the lyrics to various instruments for the seven-inch single.

The release is timed to coincide with what would have been Sagan's 75th birthday. He died in 1996 aged 62.

One-hundred-and-fifty limited edition versions of the single will also be made.

Symphony of Science, on Vinyl!

Hey Symphony of Science fans!

In case you haven't heard, the first installment in the series, A Glorious Dawn, is coming to vinyl. Keep reading for more information.

Hope you all had a great Carl Sagan Day (11/7) and Carl's birthday (11/9). I have some great news relating to the first Symphony of Science piece.

I am thrilled to announce a collaboration with the great Jack White and friends at Third Man Records, in Nashville, TN. We have released a 7" vinyl single of the song A Glorious Dawn, featuring a special etching of the Voyager Golden Record cover on the B-side; this makes for a great collector's item, and a novel way to experience the song as well. It was released yesterday, 11/9, on Sagan's 75th birthday.

I would like to thank Ann Druyan and Jack White for being so open minded and making this whole thing possible. You can go to the Third Man Records site to learn more about the release:

And to their store to order it:

In other news, a new video for the series is coming along and should be out in a week or two. Stay tuned for more, and thanks for reading!

(Many of the songs are hilarious, and apparently Dr. Hawking thinks the whole thing is pretty funny...)
